Grain .CanNow
Winter -Months
Canadian farmers, elevator oper-
ators and inill owners may well
have a new solution to their grain
storage problems in-the, experience
of a United States milling com-
pany, Portable tents of coated ny-
lon have 'been successfully used in
the Montana operations of General.
Mills,' Inc., to handle :wheat when
elevators were overflowing and
bok cars in-short supply,
Four nylon tents, coated with
neoprene, and each with a capacity
of 30,000 bushels, were used by
General. Mills' and resulted in in-
creased efficiency in grain storage
and handling. Although two of the
tents remained up during the ice,
snow and high winds of winter,
Montana manager Walter IL Mills,
Jr., reported 'no resulting damage
to either grain or tents.
Relatively new to agriculture, the
tents are expected to be a boon to
the farm owner as well as ,to mills
and other processors for storing
wheat, oats and beans, Units with
capacities ranging from 1,000 to
1,000,000 bushels are now available
in the United States. But the
manufacturers consider the most
popular size to be the 30,000-bushel • tent,
A typical unit consists of 'four-
foot nylon walls, a nylon 'floor and
a nylon top. Floor and 'walls are
fabricated, as one unit to ensure
that the grain never touches the
ground. Seams are cemented fOr
waterproofness after fabrication.
A tubular steel frame' supports the
retaining Wall.
Manufacturers claim that ordin-
ary screw conveyors, With exten;
sions if necessary, can be used to
fill any size bin. Gravity permits
unloading as much as 80 per cent
of the grain through snouts along
the wall with very little manual
labor.
Since 'these Coated nylon tents
have proved their worth to grain
men in the United States, it is
quite likely that a Canadian-made
product recently introduced by
Dominion Rubber Company Limit-
ed and known as "Fiberthin" may
answer similar problems- in Can-
ada. •
