NEW HAWN IS :0061
Last week saw the formation of
a. -new nation, with the official union
f sevetal islands which will hence-
fOrth be known as the West Indies•
Federation,with its capital a Port
of $pain in Trinidad.
Until recent times the isf"--ands
have been crown colonies of Gre'at
Britain, and the fact that they are
• free to establish their own indepen-
dent nationhood is again evidence
that British "imperialistic" aims are
snot being forced on the young coun-
tries which have reached a stage
where self-government is possible.
• About a year ago Ghana, in Africa,
achieved its independence of the
British inthesame free process of
development.
Perhaps not too many Canadians
are aware that there is a 'natural
,psychological tie between the West
Tpdians and. our Country. We were
quite surprised, during a visit to
Bermuda, to find that there is'a very
definite feeling of kinship between
Bermudians and Canadians, the lat-
ter occupying many posts of respon-
sibility in the Atlantic Islands, As
one example, a large percentage of
the staff of the hospital which serves
Hamilton, Bermuda, is composed' of
Canadian nurses.
We were quite amused to note
the warming of interest when the
•Bermudians found we were Canadian
rather than American. There was

no indication, of course, that they
were at all unfriendly toward Ameri-
cans — merely that they were more
friendly to Canadians, Whether
this same spirit prevails in equal de-
gree in the islands of the West
Indies group we do not know, but
judging from the number of stu-
dents who make the long journey to
-Canada for advanced education, it is
safe to assume that such -is the case.
There is more behind this feelv
lug of kinship than the fact that we
are citizens of sister lands within the
British Commonwealth. Perhaps it
lies in the feeling that the United
States, as an alternative sphere of
interest and association, is simply
too big. The people of the islands
maY have the subconscious reaction
of fear at the danger' of being swal-
lowed whole by tbe mammoth which
influences all lives in the Western
Hemisphere so sharPly,
'This spirit of well -knit ties is
something which we should value
in extreme degree, for there' are
many benefits to be derived from
closer association. For one thing
there is a tremendous potential
trade, a market for our manufactur-
ed products and food supplies. The
West Indies haVe been poor custom-
ers of oars only because they were
not particularly Wealthy ones,
Viven more important than the
monetary rewards are the people
themselves. . Their younger gener-
ation is producing many fine, devot.
ed scholars who have much to .con-
tribute to the growth and develop-
ment of Canada, if they -choose to
live here. And in Canada, so far,
many of the young people, who hap-
pen to have been born with dark
skins, have found a land where toler-
ation, though ,not uniVersal, is rea-
sonably general. Let us hope that it
may 'remain so.

Huron Fed. of Agriculture
d The most important event of the
4pmirig week is the coming wheat
vete, I -#et me repeat the objects of
the proposed "Wheat Marketing
PITailhe first is the stabilizing of the
Priee. In the Pftst the price bat
varied greatly ,over the year, This
is certainly had for the farmer
who has to sell at harvat time
when the Price la lovit. It is also
had for the smaller, millers who
haven't enough storage to be able'
to buy a large percentage of their
requirements at the low price.
It is hoped that a minimum price
will be established at harvest time
with an increase each month te
cover storage throughout the year.
The second objective is to pr:a,.
vide orderly marketing to the
trade. Many millers have said they
would uSe Ontario wheat if 'they
could be sure of a, continuous sup-
ply, This has not been possible in
the past since storage was .,not
available in quantity.
Thirdly, records are not avail-
able as to where the -Ontario wheat
is processekl or the quantity re-
guirect for the different manufac-
tured products. Through this mar-
keting plan records will develop
which will give the board valuable
information., From this informa-
tion_ storage can be arranged in
the most satisfactory, manner' and
cOntinuity of supply can be guar-
anteed to; the processor,
Finally, Ontario winter' wheat
has particular and valuable pro-
perties. It is felt that research iS
necessary to take advantage of
these characteristics to , develop
new markets.
We are hoping that there will
be a very high percentage of the
wheat producers who are interest-
ed enough in their product to go
to the polls and cast their ballot.
This is h real test of the interest
farmers really .have in their. own
business. It is not so much a mat-
ter of Winning the wheat vote as it
is a show of determination on the
part of producers to find a better
and more equitable method of dis-
posing of the results of their
labour.
Let's do everything in tuft power
to encourage every wheat Producer
to cast his ballot Friday, January
'17th.
