Blyth Bantams on a roll with double wins
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Bantams played .500
hockey last week as they humbled
an overmatched Brussels team on
Dec. 14 by a 14-1 score, then were
nipped 4-3 by Wingham on
Dec. 17.
Jason Rutledge led the attack
against Brussels by scoring four
goals and adding three assists.
Linemates Ryan Chamney, with
two, and Christopher Howson also
lit up the red light with both also
notching two assists each. Chris
Stewart, Peter Craig and Michael
de Jong each contributed two goals
with de Jong adding three assists
and Craig adding a single helper to
their offensive stats. Brad Ander
son had a big game offensively also
as he rounded out the goal scoring
while chipping in with three assists.
Brian Marks showed off his
playmaking skills by picking up
four assists while defenceman
Jonathan Collins, with two, Henry
Bos and Rob Johnston also added
game assists.
These games do not do much for
either teams' development so an
exhibition game against Wingham
was welcome. Blyth learned they
will have to step up their game a
notch or two if they want to
compete against better competition
as Wingham handed Blyth their
second loss of the season with a 4-3
win.
After a scoreless first period,
Brian McNichol and Michael de
Jong set up the first goal of the
game two minutes into me second
as Brian Marks buried a drop pass.
Wingham scored three straight
goals but Blyth responded in the
final minute of the second to cut
the lead to 3-2.
Mike Salverda fed Michael de
Jong a nice pass and deJong scored
with a slap shot to the top shelf
where they keep all the old hockey
cliches.
Wingham regained their two goal
lead early in the third but it was
short-lived as Blyth once again cut
the lead to a single goal 70 seconds
later.
Blyth pulled their goalie in the
final minute and mounted a furious
attack. They brought the crowd to
their feet as they did everything but
put the biscuit in the basket and
Wingham emerged with a 4-2 win.
Bulls drop to third place

The Brussels Jr C's continue to
play solid hockey on the road but
their inability to win on home ice
has allowed the Wingham Ironmen
to move into second place two
points ahead of the 10 win - 6 loss
- three tie Bulls,
Friday night in Hanover a short
staffed Bulls club dug deep and
held the Barons to a 2-2 tie.
Jonathan Lane scored the penalty
free first period's only goal at the
18.00 minute mark.
The Barons tied the score
seconds into second period action
before Brian Zabel scored
unassisted on a breakaway late in
the middle frame.
The lead held to the 14.00 minute
mark of the third period action
when the league's leading scorer
Jeremy Franks tied the game.
Trevor Fortune gave the Bulls
outstanding goaltending as the
Bulls were outshot 31-14.
The game was virtually penalty
free with only nine minors and two
fighting majors assessed, all in the
second period with the exception of
one minor.
Sunday afternoon the Bulls lost a
3-1 lead and settled for a 4-4 tie
with the visiting Walkerton
Blackhawks.
Jonathan Lane opened the
scoring with a shorthanded effort
early in first period action and then
picked the top comer, glove side on
a penalty shot attempt midway
through the second period. A
Walkerton goal was matched by
Jamie Williams before the Black
Hawks surprised with two last
minute markers for a 3-3 tie
heading into the final period.
Walkerton took the lead when
Ryan Howard went coast to coast
but Nate Bender tipped in a shot
with three minutes remaining for
the tie.
The Algonquin ‘3’ Stars were
Jonathan Lane, Ryan Howard and
Nate Bender.

Brussels Atoms win
Continued from page 28
The third period began almost the
same as the first with, Wilson strik
ing early, this time assisted by
Stephen Oldfield and Joel Kelling-
ton. Then four minutes later Smith
and Hunt combined to set up
Gropp, who added to the Brussels'
tally. With just over a minute left,
Chad Fischer, assisted by Tyler
Bragg, popped in the final goal of
the game.
The Atoms have no games during
the holiday season, but are back in
action on Jan. 3 when they're on the
road to face-off against Zurich.
