On Tuesday, Nov. 17 two ladies
came to Brussels Public School to
check the primary classes eyes and
ears. Shirley Steepe was checking
hearing and Sylvia Harmon was
checking vision.
Primary classes at Brussels
Public School are also involved
with a project on hats and they are
doing arts and crafts on them.

GRADE ONE/TWO
Grade one/two's has been writing
several creative stories this fall.
They are choosing their favourites
and are beginning to edit them
before publishing them into a final
copy.
Some of the children are using
the computers for their final copy.
GRADE TWO/THREE
Mrs. Little's grade two/three class
is learning to play the recorder.
They have learned to play three
notes, B, A and G. They played a
song for Mr. Harrison called
“Peace Must Be Our Goal.” He was
very impressed.
GRADE SEVEN
The grade seven class has been
busy classifying footwear during
science. Groups of three or four
have been writing down all kinds of
footwear, later to be described on
charts.
In art they have been “blowing
up” pictures and designs. Some
began portrait study. Mrs. Laurie
has been getting everyone ready for
the Christmas play, which is put on
every year.
There have been tests in science,
geography, math and history, as a
result of report card time.
GRADE EIGHT
Grade eight pupils visited the
Blyth Library. Mrs. Brigham
outlined the pre-kindergarten
program for them. Over the rest of
the school year, different pupils
will be running the pre
kindergarten program. The pupils
were also encouraged to borrow
books.
are coming along great. All the
Remembrance Day posters looked
great at the service.
Ryan Construction also came to
our school last week to fix the
parking lot so teachers and visitors
do not have to park on the road.
They also put big green pipes in
because the water in the baseball
and soccer fields was draining into
the neighbours yards and the pipes
are connected to the storm sewers.
The storm Thursday night had
high winds accompanied by heavy
rains which lashed the area. The
mighty Maitland overflowed its
banks and strong winds toppled
down branches and trees. Winds
even knocked over transport trucks
with trailers and caused car
accidents. We had a large pine tree
topple over in the school's front
yard.

GRADE ONE
Grade one is having a bear-y
good time. They have brought a
favourite bear to school. They have
learned how to draw a bear. Their
grade four/five buddies helped
them sew a bear. Mrs. Gross is also
helping them to write a book which
they will publish. Beary, beary
good.
GRADE THREE/FOUR
In math grade three is learning
addition with two regroupings, and
grade four is working on
subtraction with three regroupings.
Shawn Cottrill had a birthday last
week and Amy Barnes has one this
week.
GRADE FIVE/SIX
For the wrap-up to the mapping
unit, each person is creating a
country. They have to tell its
location in the world and then
describe the climate, vegetation,
animal life, resources and land
forms. The fun part is deciding on a
name, and creating a flag, money,
and a tourist attraction. Students
will map all the countries on a large
world map.
GRADE SIX/SEVEN
The grade six/seven class had
tests in history, math, language,
and French.
They are doing string art in art
class.
The class is starting the Quest
program and are hoping to enjoy it.
In Science class, they're doing
investigations. The grade
six/seven's are starting a research
project on a foreign city in
geography class.
In English class, they are doing a
unit called “Frights, Fears and
Phobia.” It is all about fears. It's
fun!
GRADE EIGHT
Well, a whole series of tests has
been completed, and grade eight
can move on to new and less
stressful work. We're starting a new
unit in science - Force, Work, and
Energy, an entirely new field quite
different from our work in biology.
Our geography course is dealing
with population patterns in the
developing world, and in the
process we are discovering how
fortunate we, in this country, are.
LIBRARY
Grade one is really excited about
illustrating and publishing their
• very own books. They are using
Mick Inkpen's book, entitled One
Bear at Bedtime, as a pattern. The
adventures of Mouseskin, the
friendly storybook character, are
being followed closely by grade
two as they continue their mouse
unit.
This week the grade eight
students are learning how to use the

SPECIAL EVENTS
Well, our school did a fantastic
job of cutting down on the amount
of garbage. In the last two weeks
there was only 95.75 kg. collected.
The top five classes with the least
amount were as follows: grade
four/five 5.6 kg.; grade eight, 5.95
kg.; grade three, 6.45 kg.; grade
one, 9.15 kg. and grade three/four,
10.5 kg.
Hopefully this trend will
continue so we will cut down on
the amount of garbage that goes
into the landfill site.
