The Citizen, 1992-11-25, Page 8Strong offense leads to Brussels Atoms win There it goes Brussels Bulls goalie Gary Bridge successfully deflects a slaphot during the second period action of the Junior "C" game on Sunday afternoon against the Grand Valley Harvesters.Bridge, unfortunately didn't fare as well throughout the game as the visiting team drove in a total of 10 goals for a six point victory over the Bulls. Bulls in second place The Brussels Bulls moved into second place in Western Jr C action after winning two of three games played on the weekend. Friday night in Goderich the Bulls keel-hauled the Sailors with four first period goals enroute to an 8-3 victory. Ted Sills led the attack with a three-goal, three-assist performance while linemates Steve Fritz and Brian Zabel added two goals and three assists respectively. Jason Baier, Nate Bender, and Jamie Scott added singles in a game that saw Brussels holding period leads of 4-0 and 5-2. Saturday night the Bulls again hit the scoreboard early with three goals in the opening 10 minutes for a final 9-4 win in Mt. Forest. Steve Fritz and Alex Motley each enjoyed a two-goal game with Jason Camm, Jamie Williams, Jeff Coulter, Ted Sills and Greg McNevan scoring singles. Sunday afternoon the Bulls lost their third consecutive home game as Grand Valley scored five powerplay and two shorthanded goals for a 10-4 Harvester victory. Trailing 4-0 after 20 minutes, Brian Zabel and Tim Beyer scored early second period goals, but a costly four minute minor allowed Grand Valley to score five in a row for a 9-2 lead. Jonathan Lane and Jason Baier ended the Bulls scoring late in the game. Grand Valley swept the Formosa 3-star award with Glen Watt, the game's first star enjoying a six point game. Defenceman Steve Sciannitti and Steve Clark earned second and third star honors. The Bulls next game is at home Sunday afternoon against the Wingham Ironmen. In a strong offensive effort, the Brussels Houseleague Atoms over­ powered the visiting Goderich II team to a 10-1 victory in WOAA action on Nov. 20. Brussels struck early in the first when Trevor Wilson and Darrell Dalton set up a speedy Tyler Bragg for the goal. Excellent defense from the visiting goalie held the home team down until Joel Keftington nudged it past with 3:30 left in the period. Brussels really took control of the game in the second, shutting out the visitors again while adding four more goals to their score. Shawn Engel hit first off a play by Joshua Gropp, which was quickly followed by another goal from Carla Hunt, assisted by Ryan Smith. Trevor Wilson shot in the third goal on a breakaway then with 18 seconds remaining Joel Kelling- ton and Hunt combined to set up Matthew McLellan. The third period was more of the same with Jason Armstrong and Nathan Conley setting up Wilson. Less than two minutes later Kellington made the play to McLellan who nudged in his sec­ ond goal. Keeping the momentum going, McLellan tagged on another Brussels Reps dominate ice The Brussels WOAA Rep team dominated the ice Friday night and beat the visiting Seaforth team 5-0. Adam Carr started the scoring spree for the Brussels team in the first period. His goal was quickly followed by another from Andrew Exel, assisted by Corey Newman and Chad McCallum. McCallum, assisted by Exel, added to Brussels lead with a goal in the third period. Seconds later, Exel drilled another into the net. Clint Fischer, assisted by McCal­ lum and Exel launched the final goal. off a play by Bragg. Then, with 1:46 remaining, Goderich snuck one past Brussels goaltender, Stephen Oldfield, rob­ bing him of a shut-out. Not to be outdone, however, Wilson, paired with Sam Zahnd to wrack up anoth­ er point for the home team. Goderich gets a chance to get it back next Saturday when Brussels travels there for an afternoon game. In a tremendous offensive effort, Brussels nudged three goals past the Milverton goalie before the vis­ itors could respond. The first goal was scored by Pete Gusso off Mark Robinson, then just one minute later Ryan Finch added some insur­ ance. The third goal came halfway through the period off the stick of Brent Whitmore. Milverton answered back seconds later, then cut the lead with another shot at 8:50. Brussels responded less than two minutes later when Wayne Alexander shot one into the Milver­ ton net. Alexander came back a minute later off a play by Mike McNichol for the final goal of the first period, giving Brussels a 5-2 lead. Play in the second period seemed a little less one-sided with Brussels getting two and Milverton one. Finch and Tim Machan combined to start things off for the home team. Milverton scored the second goal of the period which was answered by McNichol off a play by Alexander. Finch was hot in the third scoring the first two home goals of the peri­ od off Machan. Milverton managed to sneak one past between the Finch/Machan plays. The final goal came with 6:54 remaining, after Machan and Randy Beuermann set up Whitmore for his second goal of the game. Following their mid-week win, the Brussels Midgets competed in the Zurich Midget Hockey Tourna­ ment and won the consolation round. A first-game loss in the tourna­ ment against Ilderton put them in the consolation round. The Midgets held their own against Ilderton in the first inning with goals by Ryan Finch, assisted by Wayne Alexan­ der and Tim Machan, assisted by Finch. However by the third, they were well behind and only managed to add one goal to their score. It was scored by Mike Bromley, assisted by Brent Whitmore and Chris Stevenson. Final score was 5-3 for Ilderton. Brussels rallied back in their sec­ ond game to beat Listowel 7-2. Brussels goal scorers were: Chris Stevenson; Finch, assisted by Machan; Mark Robinson, assisted by Bromley and Brett Clarkson; Pete Gusso; Wayne Alexander assisted by Machan; Finch with an assist by Machan; and Bromley. This win advanced the team to the consolation round final where things began looking bad for the team as their opposition from Mount Bridges opened up a three goal lead in the first five minutes. The scare prompted an immedi­ ate retaliation as Brussels shut down the Mt. Forest scoring machine and responded with four goals of their own by Bromley, assisted by Clarkson; Wayne Alexander, assisted by Brad Beuer­ mann and Finch; Finch assisted by Machan and Beuermann assisted by Robinson and Bromley. Both teams added two more in the second. Brussels' were lobbed by Robinson, assisted by Bromley and Mike McNichol and Machan, assisted by Chris Stevenson and Alexander. Finally, the Midgets let loose in the third period with a whopping five-goal spree led by Bromley. Alexander followed with some help from Finch and Beuermann. Clean­ ing up was Bromley, who was assisted by Clarkson and Robinson for his first goal and Robinson with his second. He scored solo with his last.
