The Blyth team proved to be accurate shooters as they ended up winning this game and the industrial hockey portion of the Blyth Minor Hockey and Ringette Tournament held this weekend in Blyth Arena. Old-timer hockey and broomball was also part of the tournament with Mildmay winning the Old-timers division and Par Line winning both the ladies' and men's broomball divisions. by Rusty Blades The Blyth Bantams continued their puck prowess recently as they iced three more games into the W column. They hosted Milverton on Nov. 2 and pulled away from a 2-2 first period tie with three power play goals on their way to a 7-2 triumph. Once again the line of Brian McNichoi, Chris Stewart and Brian Marks was the offensive catalyst as McNichoi had a pair of goals and assists. Stewart recorded two goals as well as picking up four helpers while Marks notched a goal and an assist. Ryan Chamney had the game opening goal while Michael de Jong, who was playing forward for the game, picked up Blyth's other goal and added an assist. Blyth then hosted Stephen Township on Nov. 9 where they once again blew open a close game in the second period with three unanswered goals on their way to a 7-4 win. ‘ The line of Ryan Chamney, Christopher Howson and Jason Rutledge provided the offensive spark to lead the Bantams. They combined for 13 scoring points as Howson counted both a pair of goals and assists, Chamney added two goals and three assists and Rutledge chipped in with a single goal but an important three assists. Michael Salverda and Brian Marks, completed the scoring with Brian McNichoi, Greg Toll and Peter Craig picking up assists. Their winning way continued in Monkton on Nov. 13. Although Blyth certainly controlled the play throughout the contests, they had a tough time finishing their plays. Goaltenders Michael de Jong and Chris Lee shared their first shut-out of the year as they stopped all 10 shots in this 5-0 whitewash. The defence came up with a big game to lead the attack. Henry Bos and Jonathan Collins each scored a goal with blueline slappers while each also picked up an assist. Jason Rutledge set up Peter Craig's point blast which deflected into the net off Christopher Howson. Brian Marks opened the scoring in the second period on a screen shot while Brian McNichoi closed out the scoring halfway through the third. Michael Salverda, with two and Chris Stewart counted assists as Blyth only played well enough to win in this 5-0 game. On Friday night, they went out of town to play Goderich and were edged out in the third period 3-2. Brussels player Cory Campbell scored the first goal early in the first period but minutes later Goderich caught up and then moved ahead with another goal seconds later. Brussels came back to tie the game in the second period with a goal by Trevor Wilson assisted by Cory Campbell and Mike Cooper. But Goderich scored again in the third and Brussels never caught up. Blyth skate-a-thon raises $2,667. 40 The PeeWees rallied back on Sat­ urday when they played the Zurich PeeWees in Zurich and beat them 2-1. Again Brussels started the scor­ ing with a second period goal by Cory Campbell assisted by David Proulx. Zurich caught up minutes later but Brussels wasn't going to be defeated and with seconds left in the third period, Corey Bragg shot one into the net. Eighty-three skaters registered for the Blyth skate-a-thon held Oct. 31. They raised 2,667.40, which will go towards ice time, teachers and referees. Prize winners for raising the most money were: seven and under, first, Kirk Stewart, $118.50; second, Leanne Vincent, $99; third, Josh Albrechtas, $94; fourth, Eric Jarrett, $71 and fifth, Michelle Cook and Neil Salverda, tied with $64 each. Eight and over, first, Tyler Stewart, $93; second, Ashley Howson, $89; third, Lindsay Penfound, $76; fourth, Jennifer Godfrey, $72; fifth, Derek Cook, $65 and sixth, Samantha Gileson, $63. Costume winners were: seven and under, Brea Hickey and Michael Bean and eight and over, Mathew Bromley and Pauline Blok. Many people volunteered their time as bookkeepers, music organizers, and cruisers. The arena manager and staff, food booth management, parents and service clubs helped make this event possible. It tells you how the benefit is calculated and how much you will receive if your family qualifies.
