E ntertainment Gala Auction a huge success ‘Miss Julie9 at Under grand The Grand Theatre opens its 1992-1993 season downstairs in the McManus with a world premiere adaptation of August Strindberg's acclaimed masterpiece of class structure and repressed sexuality, Miss Julie. The production features a new translation by renowned Scandinavian scholar John Lingard, formerly of the University of Western Ontario, which has been collectively adapted by the company to London. Miss Julie opens on Friday, Nov. 20 and continues Until Dec. 5. Written by one of the modem world's greatest dramatists, Miss Julie tells the history of a young woman from a prominent family who, on New Year's Eve, demands a dance with her father's man servant. Jean, an opportunist, gives in the seduction. Almost immedi ately the spell breaks. And as they make plans to run away together, Jean reveals his true, animalistic nature. Miss Julie - willingly holding the end of the leash - is dragged into the darkness of her personal hell. Returning to The Grand Theatre to play the role of Julie is Kristina Nicoll, who last year starred in The Grand's If Betty Should Rise. Michael McManus, a native of London, will play the role of Jean. He is well known to London audiences for his starring role as Cale in the 1991 prod' ction of Fire, and for his portrayal last season of Gilles in Warriors. Making her Grand Theatre c^but in the part of Kirstin is Allegra Fulton who recently received rave reviews for her work in the Buddies In Bad Times production of Long, Long Way To Paradise. Martha Henry directs this world premiere production which features design by John Thompson and lighting by Russell Dufton. What a great evening! That was the consensus among those who attended the Blyth Festival's Gala Dinner Auction on Saturday, Oct. 17. The biennial event, a major fundraiser for the Festival, raised a net amount of almost $26,000. “We are extremely pleased with the outcome”, sad Philippa Borgal, one of the organizers. “You never know how much money an event like this will bring in - all sorts of things can affect how much a person will bid on an item, things we have no control over. We just worked as hard as we could to to help auction them . The two highest selling items of the evening were a trip to Prince Edward Island for two (including airfare, hotel and Anne of Green Gables tickets and the Labatt's corporate box at the SkyDome for a Blue Jays game. One of the highlights of the evening was the meal itself which received loud praise. The dinner, served to over 200 people, was lovingly prepared by Auction Committee members and volunteers, under ,<the expert guidance of Carol Irwin of the Blyth Inn, assisted by Gail Grant of Bayfield. Habitat meeting in Clinton round up a diverse selection of auction items from across Canada, and then sat back and crossed our fingers!” Adding to the fun was the presence of two well-known celebrities: John Dawe, newsanchor at Global TV, and Marilyn Brooks, top Canadian fashion designer. Both had donated items and were invited by auctioneer Richard Lobb HELPING THE WORLD WRITE NOW CODE Self-sufficiency through literacy in the developing world For information call 1-800-661-CODE An information meeting will be held Dec. 5 at Wesley-Willis United Church, for persons interested in starting a Habitat For Humanity affiliate in Huron County. The new home owners monthly mortgage payments are returned to a revolving fund which is used to build more homes for more families. There are presently 10 habitat affiliates in Canada, and 27 prospective affiliates. “There is a need for this organization in Huron County,” according to Allan Dettweiler, a Habitat spokesman. “We may not have slums in this area, but we do have families living in homes which lack proper plumbing or electrical systems or have severe structural problems. Other homes are inadequate because of family size or perhaps a family is paying too much of their income towards rent.” Award The last All Around Cord was presented to Lesley Elliott, right, by Brussels Guide leader Janet Mitchell at a special ceremony on Thursday.
