On Friday evening Brussels nar­ rowly edged out a visiting Zurich team for a 3-2 finish. Trevor Wilson slapped in the first goal with 2:19 left in the first peri­ od. Matthew McLellan provided some insurance early in the second period, but just two minutes later Zurich came back to narrow the Brussels' lead by one. A stirred up Zurich team kept the heat on scoring a second goal just a minute later to tie the game. Then with only 42 seconds left Joel Kellington and Carla Hunt set up the play for Matthew McLellan who drove the third goal past the Zurich goaltender. That finished the scoring as nei­ ther team managed to edge the puck into the opposition's net dur­ ing the third period. On Saturday night, Brussels trav­ elled to Blyth for a game against Belgrave. Belgrave's Tyler Fenton popped in the first goal of the game in the first period, off a pass from Craig Marks but Brussels quickly responded when Matthew McLel­ lan scored on a pass from Chad Fis­ cher and Tyler Bragg. Stephen Oldfield widened the margin with 4:57 left on the clock in the first after a set up by Joel Kellington and Shawn Engel. Then with just 1:30 seconds left Oldfield scored a second goal off a pass from Joshua Gropp and Ryan Smith. Belgrave got the first goal of the second period, when Justin Camp­ bell set up Marks, only to have it erased by Nathan Conley off a pass from Robbie Mitchell and Darrell Dalton. Then with just three sec­ onds remaining Campbell, unassist­ ed, gave Belgrave its third goal. Trevor Wilson snuck in the only goal of the third period giving Brussels a 5-3 victory. Assists went to Carla Hunt and Joel Kellington. The Atoms next game is Nov. 20 against Goderich II in Brussels at 7:30. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11 ,1992. PAGE 13. On the watch Zurich edges out Belgrave Atoms in opening game It was a mad scramble for the puck as players from Brussels and Zurich Atom teams face off in fast paced hockey action last Friday in Brussels. Home goalie Stephen Oldfield stopped more than a few shots and with good offensive back up from his teammates they chalked up a 3-2 win over the visiting team. Despite lots of back and forth play, Belgrave Atoms fast-paced opening season game against Zurich on Nov. 1 ended with a 3-2 victory for the Zurich home team. Zurich came out on top in the first period of play. Then with 7:01 remaining in the second period they widened their margin by another point. Belgrave narrowed the lead with just over a minute left after Justin Campbell and Tyler Fenton set up Tim Robinson for the first Belgrave goal. Belgrave got the first goal of the third period when Craig Marks slid one past the home goalie unassist­ ed, tieing the game. Belgrave pulled goalie Curtis Knight for the last six seconds of the game, a move that proved to be their undo­ ing as the Zurich team nudged in the winning goal. Brussels Midgets victorious in a close WOAA Rep game In a close WOAA Rep game in Listowel on Nov. 3 the Brussels Midgets came home victorious, edging out the home team by 5-4. Halfway through the first period Mark Robinson assisted by Brian VanSteelandt put Brussels on the scoreboard. Then just 20 second later Chris Stevenson set up Wayne Alexander giving Brussels a two goal edge. Listowel, came back with just nine seconds left to close the gap. Brussels put on the heat in the second period again after a shot from Randy Beuermann set up Mark Robinson for his second goal fo the game. Listowel answered back two minutes later, then tied the game with 8:49 left on the clock. The home team put the pressure on early in the third taking the lead for the first lime, but Ryan Finch shot back with the tieing goal with just under seven minutes remaining on the clock. Brent Whitmore got the assist. Then on a play by Tim Machan and Greg Fritz, Whitmore came back to score the gamewin­ ning goal. On Nov. 7 Brussels travelled to Exeter where they shut out the home team 5-0. Holding off the opposition was goalie Jason Kief­ fer. Brussels overpowered the Exeter group early with three goals in the first period. Brent Whitmore and Ryan Finch set up Pete Gusso for the first, while Brett Clarkson and Whitmore set up the play for Brian VanSteelandt. Clarkson got the assist for the third goal scored by Whitmore with one second left in the period. An unassisted goal by Mark Robinson with 39 seconds remain­ ing was the only tally of the second period. Robinson got the only goal scored in the final period assisted by Gusso. Walton man fined $500 A Walton man has been fined $500 for dangerous driving and given a conditional discharge to one charge of assault. The fine was ordered by Provin­ cial Court Judge Garry Hunter in the Goderich Ontario Court of Jus­ tice Nov. 2. The defendant is Alfons Fischer, 48, a German immigrant. He was charged in August with assault, dangerous operation of a vehicle and watching and besetting after an incident at Sparky's Place in Seaforth. Court heard Mr. Fischer began paying attention to an 18-year-old waitress and the restaurant owner asked Mr Fischer to leave the girl alone. Mr. Fisher allegedly assaulted the owner and left the restaurant. Police were called and told to watch for his car. Clinton police found him and followed his car which reached high speeds when Mr. Fischer didn't pull over. Besides the $500 fine, Mr. Fisch­ er was put on probation for one year. He was also ordered to stay out of Sparky's restaurant for two years and have no contact with the waitress or the owner.
