Blyth Bantams capture tournament trophy by Rusty Blades The Blyth Bantams participated in the Zurich Bantam Tournament this past weekend. The coaching tactics of Coach McDougall no doubt made a big difference as Blyth claimed the Tournament Championship. Blyth opened the toumey against Mt. Brydges on Saturday as they used two quick goals early in the game to edge Mt. Brydges 4-2. A three-way passing play between Ryan Chamney, Christo pher Howson and Jason Rutledge resulted in Rutledge’s goal eight seconds into the game. Two minutes later Michael de Jong upped the count to 2-0 with assists to Brian Marks and Brian McNichol. Marks, McNichol and de Jong teamed up again late in the second period to give Blyth a 3-1 lead as de Jong finished off a fine 2 on 1 rush. Mt. Brydges narrowed the lead to 3-2 early in the third but the teams played scoreless until late in the game when McNichol salted the victory away. Chris Stewart set up Michael de Jong's point blast before McNichol snapped home the rebound. This 4-2 win sent Blyth into the championship round where they met up against Norwich on Sunday afternoon. Blyth used some late game heroics to shade Norwich 4- 2. The teams traded first period goals with Blyth opening the scoring 75 seconds into the game. Christopher Howson and Ryan Chamney set up Michael Salverda's tip in from the edge of the crease. Norwich scored the only second period goal to set up Blyth's third period comeback bid. Brian Marks, Brian McNichol and Chris Stewart combined for the tying goal as McNichol flipped the puck over the fallen puck stopper. Michael Salverda assisted on he winning goal with three minutes remaining as Ryan Chamney rushed down the right wing and fired a shot from the face off circle. A power play goal with 22 seconds left was the insurance Blyth needed to preserve the win. Jason Rutledge sent Christopher Howson in on a breakaway as Howson deked the goalie out of the crease and handily shot the puck into the open net. This 4-2 win propelled Blyth into the championship game where they were matched up against arch-rival Stephen Township. Although Blyth built a commanding 4-1 lead with the help of two power play goals, Stephen Township used the power play themselves to close to within a goal late in the second period. However, Blyth regained control with a goal in the final minute and added two early third period tallies and cruised the rest of the way to claim the tournament championship with this 7-3 drubbing of Stephen Township. The game scoring was evenly distributed as Brian McNichol notched two goals while single markers were scored by Christo pher Howson, Chris Stewart, Ryan Chamney, Peter Craig and Jason Rutledge. Game assists were recorded by Michael Salverda with three, Jason Rutledge, Chris Stewart and Brian Marks with two each and single assists went to Peter Craig and Christopher Howson. The tournament championship for Blyth was a direct result of total team effort. The forwards distributed the scoring evenly in all three games while the defence of Greg Toll, Henry Bos, Jonathan Collins, Peter Craig and Michael de Jong broke up most opposition rushes. Brussels PeeWees clobber Bayfield The Brussels PeeWee Rep team played their first game of the season on Oct. 30 in Brussels against Hensail. A strong team effort resulted in a 7-1 win for Brussels. The PeeWees continued their winning streak Nov. 6 when they defeated their host team Bayfield, 8-3 with another great team effort. Hopes to continue their winning streak were dashed when they travelled to Mitchell Nov. 7 and skated to a 3-3 tie. The penalties taken by Brussels were costly as all three of Mitchell's goals were scored on power plays. Two of the goals were scored with Brussels playing two men short. The team hopes to start another winning streak when they travel to Milverton Nov. 13 for a 7:45 game. The Brussels PeeWee House league team played Saturday morning at 11 a.m. against Stephen Township PeeWees. Brussels won 7-2. Rebels vs. Lazers Members of the Blyth Rebels and Lucknow Lazers rush toward the ball Tuesday night during weekly ladies' broomball play in Blyth arena. This game, the Rebels put the Lazers in their place with a 2-0 win. Brussels Bulls winning streak cut short The Brussels Bulls were brought back to reality Saturday night at the B. M. & G. Arena after a convincing 6-1 loss to the Hanover Barons. The loss is the first of the year for Brussels while Hanover improves to nine wins - one tie. Hanover and Brussels traded powerplay goals, with Brad Carter scoring for the Bulls, before the Barons took command scoring twice in the final two minutes of first period action, added a shorthanded and powerplay marker in the second and finished the scoring summary late in the third period. The Barons played their forechecking game to perfection outshooting Brussels 34-20 and outplaying the Bulls in all aspects of the game. The Bulls' next game is Sunday at home against the Walkerton Black Hawks. From the Bullspen: Sunday morning the Bulls will host a 9:30 breakfast with the Brussels Atoms with a practice afterwards. Steve Fritz was named the Formosa Player of the Month. Steve led the Bulls in scoring with six goals and 10 points during the month of October.
