Violence against women, P.D. day theme A child you know approaches you and says, “Last night my daddy got real mad and hurt my mommy”. What would you say or do? Most of us hope we will never meet the situation. Yet a classroom teacher, who may very well be spending more hours in a day with a child than his or her parents, is quite likely to have to deal with the situation. This is the reason for the upcoming Huron County board of Education’s professional develop ment day being held on Oct. 23 on the topic of “Violence Against Women”. The day will focus on many aspects of family violence. Professionals in the field will look at the symptoms and characteristics of abuse as exhibited in gender stereotyping, controlling be haviours, and date rape. One workshop will specifically explore psychologically abusive be haviours. Generally, the day is designed to explain the impact of abuse on a student's self-concept and behaviour. Social and legal organizations - police, lawyers, Children's Aid Society employees, and counsellors, for example, will explain their roles in dealing with the problems caused by abuse. As Nominees sought for award The Huron Soil and Water Conservation District (HSWCD) wishes to announce the Good Steward Award. The purposes of the award, for which nominations are now being accepted, are to recognize farmers practising good stewardship of natural resources, inform and promote good steward ship to other farms, and to increase the awareness of the media and general public of the stewardship efforts of farmers. Up to three awards will be presented each year. Eligible individuals will be landlords or tenants who are actively engaged in farming in the HSWCD (Ausable Bayfield and Maitland Valley watersheds) and who utilize good land practices in managing property under their control. Individuals devoting considerable effort to ensure that conservation is an integral part of community development will also be eligible. Of particular interest are individuals who have, during a three to five year period, contri buted significantly to the conserva tion of natural resources on the farm through one or more of the following practices: reforestation, erosion control, stream improve ment, woodlot management, grassed waterways, contour plowing, restricted cattle access, manure handling and storage, windbreaks, tile outlet protection, crop rotation, milkhouse waste management, buffer zones, alter nate watering devices, and energy conservation. It is recognized that no single one of these stewardship practices alone will provide the basis for receiving the award, but a whole farm approach will be taken in reviewing suitability of individuals to receive the Good Steward Award. Nominations for the Good Steward Award can be made by contacting the Clinton OMAF office at 482-3428 or 1-800-265- 5170. Deadline for nominations is Oct. 16. well, there will be some suggestions for forming structures and peer-support systems to help the student victims of family violence. There will also be workshops on play and art therapy and classroom strategies for dealing with aeeressive behaviour and for coping with the grief which results from family break-up. As well, abuse prevention will be emphasized by programs such as “Kids on the Block” which was designed to prevent physical and sexual child abuse. Other prevention topics include: raising self-esteem, providing safe homes in the community and modelling creative, non-violent methods of using power. The wide array of topics is sure to raise awareness of the effects of family violence on our children and to act as a springboard for further workshops and presentations so that teachers will be prepared when that trusting and hurting child comes to them.
