Huron County Highways Department employees were at work last week laying the reinforcing steel on the deck of the Cunningham Bridge near Ethel on Huron County Road 16. The wet weather and high water levels have delayed work on the project, leaving motorists to detour around the area for months. News from Ethel: Baby boy born to Edgars Grace Smith and Brenda Boyer hosted eight tables of euchre Mon day evening at the Ethel Hall. Ross Stephenson won the 50/50 draw of $12. Other winners were: high lady, Hazel McKenzie; high man, Char lie Harrison; low lady, Margaret Beimes; low man, Gerald Mathe son; most lone hands, Bill Beimes, Eva Harrison and Harold Metcalfe. Congratulations to Gordon and Bethany Edgar on the recent arrival of their new son, Edward Ralph. Speaker warns politics will change Things will change in the politics of rural issues as new coalitions are built between farmers and groups interested in rural issues, Tony Morris, OFA director told the annu al meeting of the Huron County Federation of Agriculture in Brus sels Friday night. The Bruce County farmer point ed to Bill 162, a bill amending the Game and Fish Act in which farmer groups are working together with groups like the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and Ducks Unlimited. "Once we start working together we can have more effect," he said. It's up to farmers, not to govern ment, to decide what farmers want, he said. But if society wants food to be a basic right, then how can farmers be expected to run food production as a business. If farmers are asked to provide wildlife habi tat or flood control or put the envi ronment first, then they must be compensated. "If we are to produce more than food, then society has to figure out how we are to be com pensated." He saluted the decision of the Farm Women's Network to become a full member of the OFA.
