Learning In North Huron, 1992-10-07, Page 11OCTOBER 1992. PAGE 11. Co-op education a unique learning experience With hands-on learning the focus of education today the co-op pro gram at F.E. Madill secondary School is increasing in size steadily since its inception in 1987. Teacher Jim Inwood said that year there were 24 students involved. That is up to 112 this Community work year. By enabling students to investi gate one or more careers which they think may interest them in the future the prbgram continues to help more and more students reach important decisions. Students have worked in areas such as accounting, auto mechanics, banking, butcher ing, carpentry, child care, comput ers, drafting, journalism, teaching and veterinary work to name only a few. Mr. Inwood says if a student is interested in a field and a place ment can be found for them it is up to the students to impress the employer when they are inter viewed. Most are in competition with others for the same job, which is why the year begins with study ing job readiness skills such as resume writing, completing appli cations and interviewing tech niques. "Local employers have been extremely co-operative and we have had few cases where an employer is not interested in help ing a student learn more about their chosen field," he said. Most students who apply for co op are in Grade 11 so they take co op in their Grade 12 year. Mr. Inwood says, however, that the school has found that several stu dents have found their experience to be so beneficial they take it again, frequently in another field, if they return for a fifth year of Gift Baskets For guest speakers and special occasions school. Special co-op programs allow a limited number of Grade 10 and 11 students to participate as well. Several co-op graduates have found work with their co-op employers either full-time, part- time or for the summer. Most co op students are even more deter mined, says Mr. Inwood to pursue their chosen careers after spending a year in the filed. However, some, he says, have learned an equally valuable lesson — the career they have been considering is not for them. In either case co-op is almost always a win-win situation for employer and student, says Mr. Inwood.
