Clogging puts bounce in life By Lisa Boonstoppei-Pot Clogging is the perfect exercise to put the bounce back in your step. Just ask Sherry McCall of Wal ton who offers clogging and step- dancing lessons on Monday nights from October-April at the Winthrop United Church. "Clogging is a great way to keep in shape," says Mrs. McCall who some might remember as one of the Storey Sisters who appeared regu larly on the CKNX Circle 8 Ranch show. "It's also great for mental relaxation." Her own students prove that. Of the 31 students she teaches, most are adults and when they first began taking lessons, some couldn't make it through the first hour. "Some were really tired and did n't think they’d ever be able to make it," remembers Mrs. McCall. "But two months later, they could have kept dancing for two hours. Clogging really builds up their stamina and cardio-vascular sys tem. It's amazing." Clogging is a mixture of step dancing and line-dancing and origi nated in the Smoky Mountain region of the United States, explained Mrs. McCall. She learned the art from a friend who travelled to the Smoky Moun tains to learn the dance first-hand. "You learn the basic clogging steps and from there, you use your own imagination and add a person al touch,"she says. "Clogging has really taken off," she says, especially with the adults. Though she isn't sure exactly why, she thinks it must be because clog ging can be done to any type of music. "In step-dancing, you're restricted to violin music but any kind of music works with clogging," she says. Mrs. McCall started teaching clogging three years ago and presently has 15 students in the beginner class and 16 in her regular class. The dancers are known as the Cavan Cloggers and perform at EDUCATION DIRECTORY - MUSIC & DANCE Piano lessons to grade 8, Grey Township, Sept. - June, Madeline Steiss, 887-6670, $6.00/lesson.
