PAGE 4. OCTOBER 1992. <£ha<eaiiii©ia ■ Riding for exercise and enjoyment Traditionally when people think of exercise and recreational hobbies they look at the more obvious choices, such as hockey and base ball. Three years ago, Brian Work man of W-6 Quarter Horses, a few miles south of Brussels, began looking at his favourite hobby as one he could share with others. From the time he was a child, growing up on the family farm, to adulthood, horses and riding had been a constant in his life. "I began to see it as a good form of recreation for other people, not as just something I enjoy doing," said Brian. "People thoroughly enjoy horses." The first step in turning pleasure to business was having a suitable place for lessons, so a riding arena was built adjacent to the bam com plete with a viewing room. In addi tion there is also an outdoor ring on the property. Now rain or shine, budding equestrians can, in a safe environment, learn to ride. Lessons can be booked on an individual basis at a fee of $11 an hour. Typically, people will want to book a series of lessons though there are some who opt for just an introductory lesson. While one les son won't teach someone a tremen dous amount about riding and caring for a horse it is not without its benefits, says Brian. "If nothing else they will learn whether or not it's something they want to pursue." Groups of four or five "green rid ers" can also be accommodated for trail rides at a cost of $15 per hour.
