F arm Brussels Livestock report: Fed cattle sell higher while cows remain steady Farmers rally to protect farmland from Toronto waste The sales at Brussels Livestock for the week ending Sept. 25 were: fed cattle, 1147; cows, 279; veal calves, 230; lambs and goats, 385; stockers, 1150; and pigs, light run. The market at Brussels Livestock saw fed cattle $1 higher with cows on a steady demand. There were 835 steers on offer selling from $87 to $90 to the high of $96.50. Twenty-nine steers consigned by Jim Howatt, Londesboro averaging 1356 lbs. for an average of $90.68 with sales to $96.50 purchased by Dominion Meat Packers. Eighty-four steers consigned by W. B. Pletch Co. Ltd., Rockwood averaging 1263 lbs. sold for an average of $88.55 with sales to $93.25. Twenty steers consigned by Murray Shiell, Wingham averaging 1429 lbs. sold for an average of $86.87 with sales to $91.25. Two steers consigned by Dave Matheson, Listowel averag­ ing 1205 lbs. sold for an average of $89.26 with sales to $91.25. Fifteen steers consigned by Murray McKague, Wingham averaging 1207 lbs. sold for an average of $89.49 with sales to $90.75. Sixty-three steers con­ signed by Maple Emblem Farms, Dungannon averaging 1289 lbs. sold for an average of $88.06 with sales to $90.30. Two steers consigned by Ron Gordon, Blyth averaging 1325 lbs. sold for an average of $88.54 with sales to $90. Twenty-five steers consigned by Gerald Geisel, Elmira averaging 1401 lbs. sold for an average of $86.25 with sales to $89.50. Fourteen steers consigned by Glen Johnston, Bluevale averaging 1255 lbs. sold for an average of $88.18 with sales to $89. There were 281 heifers on offer selling from $86 to $90 to the high of $95.25. One heifer consigned by Stephen Aberle, Elmira weighing 1150 lbs. sold for $95.25. Five heifers consigned by Murray Smith, Dublin averaging 1906 lbs. sold for an average of $89.72 with sales to $91.75. Seventeen heifers consigned by Robert E. Wallace, Shelburne averaging 1155 lbs. sold for an average of $87.59 with sales to $91. Twenty-four heifers consigned by Maple Ridge Farms, Brussels averaging 1117 lbs. sold for an average of $88.33 with sales to $91. Fifteen heifers consigned by Mux Lea Farms, Woodstock averaging 1263 lbs. sold for an average of $87.89 with sales to $90.10. 4-H club news by Kendra Wilson Cranbrook Chicks and Rooster Saturday, Sept. 26 meeting started with the 4H pledge. Roll call was taken then members did a fresh egg test by taking two eggs and putting them in water. The egg that floated highest was the older egg. We took a hard boiled egg and crossed sectioned it to see what it looked like. We played the safe storage game. We talked about separating egg yolks and freezing egg whites. Then we all got washed and pre­ pared a Canadian country pie. from our 4H recipes. Two heifers consigned by Paul Aidwinkle, Varna averaging 1085 lbs. sold for an average of $88.60 with sales to $90. Five heifers consigned by John Smuck, Wingham averaging 1048 lbs. sold for an average of $86.65 with sales to $90. Eight heifers consigned by Joe Zettler, Walkerton averaging 1004 lbs. sold for an average of $87.51 with sales to $89.25. There were 279 cows on offer selling from $55 to $62 to he high of $73.50. Three cows consigned by Harvey Becker, Ay ton averaging 1440 lbs. sold for an average of $60.35 with sales to $70. Four cows consigned by K & A Beef Farms, Wroxeter averaging 1423 lbs. sold for an average of $59.53 with sales to $68.50. There were 30 bulls on offer selling from $60 to $77 to the high of $82.25. One bull consigned by Aaron Fisher, Ayton weighing 1720 lbs. sold for $82.25. One bull consigned by Jack Milligan, Hanover weighing 1900 lbs. sold for $77. There were 230 veal on offer selling from $70 to $90 to the high of $104.50. Twenty-seven veal consigned by D & D Veal, Zurich averaging 569 lbs. sold for an average of $89.48 with sales to $104.50. Six veal consigned by John Martin, Lucknow averaging 603 lbs. sold for an average of $92.56 with sales to $103. Nine veal consigned by Henry Tenhove, Monkton averaging 588 lbs. sold for an average of $89.79 with sales to $98. Lambs: 50 - 80 lb., 91.00 - 99.00 with sales to 104.00; 80 and over, 59.00 - 89.00. There were 1150 stockers on offer: Steers - 400 - 500 lb., 100.00 - 125.00; 500 - 600 lb., 100.00 - 115.00; 600 - 800 lb., 95.00 - 105.00; over 800, 85.00 - 95.00. Heifers: 400 - 500 lb., 100.00 - 115.00; 500 - 600 lb., 95.00 - 110.00; 600 - 800 lb., 90.00 - 100.00; over 800, 80.00 - 95.00. Please note the Stocker sales are now starting at 10:00. This message will be delivered directly to Ontario Environment Minister Ruth Grier on Wednesday, Sept. 30 when the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) joins with other concerned rural residents in a protest rally at Queen's Park. “It appears that in her zeal to find a site for Metro Toronto's waste, Mrs. Grier is not only burying Clinton OMAF to host open house ROBERT A. AGRICULTURAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR HURON COUNTY The Ministry of Agriculture and Food office in Clinton will be holding an Open House on Wednesday, Oct. 7, between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. This is the middle day of Ontario's Agri-Food Week, which annually recognizes the contribution made to Ontario's economy by food producers, processors and distributors. The 1991 census of agriculture indicated Huron County was the provincial leader in terms of number of farmers (3,260) and in gross farm receipts ($437 million). There are 68,633 farms in Ontario with total farm receipts of $6.67 billion. On April 29, the Clinton field office moved to a new location at 100 Don Street. This new 9,000 square foot building sits on a two- acre landscaped lot with over fifty parking spaces. All offices and meeting rooms are on one floor and we offer barrier-free access. 4-H club cooks omelettes BY LESLEY ELLIOTT On Monday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 we held our first Brussels 4H meeting at Gabrielle McLaughlins with 11 members in attendance. We have three leaders Angela Pelke, Kathy Bridge and Gabrielle McLaughlin. We elected Becky McLaughlin as president, Sherry Therrien as vice president, Shannon Conley as secretary and Lesley Elliott as press reporter. The topic of our club is cooking, using chickens and eggs. To complete the evening we cooked omelettes which were enjoyed by everyone.
