The program is one of only six in existence in Ontario. Close to half of the school's grad uates came to tour the school, look at the hospital archives, and attend a celebratory supper. "It's not only a celebration, it's a thank-you to the community for all the support it has given the school throughout the years" says Yvonne Coultes, a member of the 50th anniversary committee. Fellow committee members are Tracy Nicholson and Clayton Baird who, along with Mrs. Coultes work at the hospital, and Verna Steffler, a graduate of the school, who is now executive director of the Ontario Association of Nursing Assistants. Throughout the years, there have been many changes at the school. When it first started, World War II was in progress and there was a great demand for registered nurses in small hospitals due to the num ber enlisted in the three branches of the armed forces. The Wingham and District Hospital program was initiated in September 1942 by Iris Morrey and was one of the earlier programs in Ontario. Six local women enrolled that first year with three successfully completing the program to become the first Ward Aides for Wingham General Hospital (the official title at that time). Former Cranbrook couple years of marriagemarks 60 James and Jean Keys of 27 Ord St. Seaforth were honoured this past weekend by family and friends on the occasion of their 60th wed ding anniversary. It was Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1932 when Rev. D.A. Williams of Knox Presbyterian Church in Cran brook married Jean Elizabeth Smalldon and Jim Keys. The bride, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Smalldon and the groom, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Keys had known each other since they wre school children at SS#7. They both grew up on farms in the Cranbrook area and attended Knox church. They wre attended at the ceremo ny by friends, Marie Huether (McTaggart) of Brussels and the late Ralph Noble of Cranbrook. The couple honeymooned in St. Thomas, Niagara and Buffalo after which they returned to their farm east of Brussels. In 1946 they moved to McKillop Township, where they farmed for 10 years. sible for their own room and board. From 1947 to 1964, residents were provided with room and board by the hospital. The nursing title has also under gone changes throughout the years from Ward Aids in the 40's to Cer tified Nursing Assistant in the late 40's and early 50's to Registered Nursing Assistants in the 60's. Now, with new legislation the nurs es will be known as Registered Practical Nurses. Through the years from 1963- 1992, the average annual enroll ment of 20 students has produced 534 graduates, of whom 517 achieved their goal of becoming Registered Nursing Assistants (the 16 graduates of May 1992 are anticipating registration this month.) before moving to Seaforth. Their son now operates the farm. The Keys had three children, Douglas, Dorothy and Eleanor. As was the tradition in those days, Jean stayed home to raise the chil dren, while Jim was busy on the farm. In addition he was a church elder, treasurer of McKillop Tele phone and Seaforth Fall Fair and agent for McKillop Insurance. Mrs. Keyes, in her spare time was a member of the Women's Institute and enjoyed quilting. The Keys family has grown over the years. Douglas and his wife Catherine had two children, Brian married to Janet and Heather mar ried to Chris Millar. Dorothy is the wife of the late Mack Sholdice.
