Legion wins a first in Fall Fair chili-cookoff BY SANDRA JOSLING The week of Sept. 20-26 is Legion Week, a chance for the public to leam of the work and the special activities done by the Legion yearly. There have been changes to the Legion membership eligibility. If you care to become a member you can join as an Ordinary, someone who has served or is serving in the Armed Forces, The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Militia and Commissioned Officers on the Cadet Instructor list. An Associate is a spouse of an Ordinary or Life member or daughter of an Ordinary or Life Member, or anyone who has served three years in the Canadian Armed Forces Cadet Groups. This category has now been opened to the grandchildren of Ordinary or Life members. Lastly, Fraternal members are persons not eligible for Ordinary or Associate membership but can be affiliated to the Branch Fraternal for social and educational purposes. All persons eligible for membership in the Royal Canadian Legion are welcome to apply at their local Branch. The Brussels Legion Cadet Corp is searching for interested persons to help with the Corp. There is no need for experience as they are willing to train. A special congratulations is extended to Comrade Mark Howard. Mark represented the Brussels Legion at the Fall Fair Chili Cook-off. This week's euchre results are as follows: high lady, Martha Logan; high man, Nancy Coyne; low lady, Lynda Shaw; low man, Isabel Alcock; most lone hands, ladies, Helen Dobson and men, John Hedden. The most zeros this week were Kitty Rutledge and Gordon Jacklin. The next euchre night is Wednesday, Sept. 30. Church news Brussels Mennonite Fellowship Pastor Tom Warner preached from Matthew 2, on Sunday, Sept. 20. Being a Christian does not make your life perfect. It means that God will walk through it with you. As a sermon title, Tom used “Jesus inspires terror and worship. He inspires terror to those who disobey God and worship to those who must and obey. For example, Herod was so terrified of Christ that he ordered all babies under two years of age to be killed. The ladies will meet at the Church for their monthly fellowship meeting on Tuesday evening, Sept. 22, with Linda Garland and Marg Becker in charge of the meeting. The Junior Youth (grade 7-8) will meet at the Church on Saturday evening for a video and game. Venture Club will resume Oct. 1. We are terribly excited about being part of the writing team of the Citizen. We hope we do well. Welcome to Mr. Doug Riley, who joins us from Hullett School. He is our grade 5/6 teacher. Mr. Riley says he likes his job; hopefully he will still like it later on. He said he has a pretty good bunch of students and he likes Brussels. He lives in Winthrop on a farm. Mr. Riley said the kids are friendly and the staff is nice. He enjoyed meeting the community at the barbecue and we should add that he is a great cook. Mr. Hooftman is our new French teacher. He told us he likes new starts and his stay so far has been very enjoyable. Mr. Hooftman now No suspects in hit and run Wingham OPP have no suspects in a minor hit and run accident in Brussels at 5 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 13. An OPP spokesperson said that a 1985 Ford LTD, owned by Karen Slater of Brussels was parked on Thomas St. when it was struck in the left rear comer by an unknown vehicle. He enjoys following sports, playing golf and hopes to curl this winter. He looks forward to seeing our soon-to-be-finished playground. Mrs. Perry is our new vocal music and grade seven teacher. Mrs. Perry taught in Exeter. She lives in Walton. She told us she enjoys winter sports, especially downhill skiing. She enjoyed the fair parade and looking at our display in the auditorium.
