Singer likes small town audience
BY BONNIE GROPP
Well-known entertainer, John
Allan Cameron will be making his
Blyth debut as the opening perfor
mance in the Centre for the Arts
fall series on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Mr. Cameron, who has enjoyed
over two decades in the music
industry and has toured extensively
says he really enjoys the atmo
sphere of performing to small town
audiences. "I was brought up in a
small town in Cape Breton and I
always look forward to performing
in one. There are such friendly peo
ple in small towns," he says.
Mr. Cameron says he likes to
provide his audiences with a broad
range of material to appeal to all
ages and musical tastes. "What I
generally try to do is entertain peo
ple so they can forget the doings
and goings-on of the daily world," I
just try and give them two and a
half hours of good entertainment,"
he said

Blyth Fest, Singers
to host Minifest ’92
The Blyth Festival Singers and
conductor, Wade Whittaker, are
getting ready for an exciting fall
season as they prepare to host the
Ontario Choral Federation Minifest
’92 on Oct. 24 at the Blyth
Memorial Community Hall. This is
one of the first mini-festivals
organized by the Ontario Choral
Federation and certainly the first in
this area.
Choristers from all over
southwestern Ontario will gather
for this one day event. They will
rehearse with master clinician, Ken
Fleet, during the day and perform
as a massed choir at the concert in
the evening. In celebration of
Canada's 125th anniversary the
repertoire will be a variety of music
written or arranged by Canadian
composers.
Clinician, Ken Fleet, is a well-
known and much enjoyed choral
conductor. He has been a music
teacher for many years at Medway
High School in Arva and his choirs
have won many national and
international competitions. He is
conductor for London Pro Musical
and was also conductor of the
Faculty of Music Singers at the
University of Western Ontario.

Mr. Cameron's professional
career began at the age of 12 when
he accompanied his brother's fiddle
playing on guitar, but it wasn't until
his years in university that he got
caught up in the power of good
entertainment. "When I would play
for the students at coffee shops and
they would clap and say it was
okay, then I knew that maybe I was
good enough. In effect the public
will tell you if you have a chance."
However, Mr. Cameron also
admits that when he started the
Canadian music industry was taint
ed by the belief that if it was Cana
dian it wasn't good enough. "That
attitude unfortunately still persists,"
he said, adding that his early expo
sure on the Don Messer Show and
later his own television show
helped him with his gradual climb
to success. "I was lucky in that
regard," he said.

To give the choir a head start in

The Blyth Festival Singers is an

"The process of education is to find
out what you're good at, whatever it
is. When you pursue that you find
contentment."
Doing what he loves means tak
ing some chances for the entertain

his material. "Some of the songs I
do are 500 years old, but what I do,
I do from the heart".
And that feeling is probably what
keeps him a favourite with audi

"I absolutely love performing. I
