Guest speaker tells of African
trip at Duffs UCW meeting
The United Church Women of
Duffs United Church met in the
church basement for their
September meeting, Wednesday
evening.
Edith Wey welcomed the good
turnout of ladies and opened the
worship with prayer. Marie
McGavin was pianist for the hymn,
“In Loving Partnership”. Scripture
was taken from Psalm 5 followed
by meditation on privilege and
responsibility. “Amazing Grace”
was sung. Helen Williamson read a
poem “Life's Mirror”. The offering
was received and dedicated. “For
the Fruit of All Creations” was
sung closing this devotional part of
the meeting.
Audrey Hackwell of the Church
in Society committee introduced
the guest speaker, Janet Papple who
told of their experience on the trip
to Africa connection with the
Canadian Food Grains Bank
travelling through Ethiopia, Kenya,
Zimbabwe, Zambia and the people
of those countries. She showed
lovely pictures and had many
articles on display from those
countries.
Marie McGavin presided for the
business, opening with a reading
and an item on ‘what are
volunteers.’ Minutes were read by
Doreen Hackwell who gave out
several coming events.
Roll call was answered by
“Name your first school - What is
its function now?” Leona
McDonald gave the treasurer's
report.
The Regal order is to be in to
Kathleen Williamson by the end of
September. The Heritage Books
have been ordered again this year.
Resignations are to be in by Oct. 1.

Community throws
shower for
Sheila Bachert
A community shower was held
on Friday evening, Sept. 11 in the
basement of Duffs United Church
in honour of Sheila Bachert whose
forthcoming marriage to Paul
Ganoe will be held this Saturday,
Sept. 19 at Waterloo.
Helen Craig welcomed everyone,
especially Sheila, her mother Janet
Bachert and grandmother, Mabel
Bachert of Seaforth who were
presented with corsages and seated
in decorated chairs at the front of
the decorated room.
Helen opened the program with a
reading followed by a piano solo,
“From a Distance” by Kim Baan.
Helen conducted a contest on what
Sheila would take on her
honeymoon, which was won by
Kerri Bachert. Margaret Craig read
a couple of interesting readings for
the bride-to-be.
Helen then had a “pass the
parcel” contest with Marie
McGavin playing the music. This
was won by Sherry Baan. Shannon
Craig played a piano solo,
“Memories”.
Heather (Baan) Gerber, a school
chum of Sheila's read the address
of congratulations from her friends
and neighbours with many useful
gifts presented to her. Sheila
thanked everyone for such lovely
gifts. The bows from the parcels
were put on a wreath and a lovely
cameo cloth made by Phyllis
Mitchell was presented to Sheila.
Everyone had their name written on
it as they arrived.

half hour was enjoyed visiting with
friends.
