Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Rodger 48 Auburn children go swimming Forty-eight children from the Auburn area have enjoyed two weeks of swimming lessons at the Vanastra pool, thanks to the Surprise 50th anniversary party held A surprise 50th wedding anniversary party for Donnybrook native Earl Plowman and his wife Ruth now of Collingwood, Ont. was held Sept. 6 at the East Wawanosh farm of his niece Doreen and her husband Bill Taylor and family. At the age of 40 Earl went to auctioneer's school and became a well-known auctioneer. For 14 years Earl was one of the truck drivers for the Royal Canadian Mounties who thrilled the crowds with their world famous musical ride. Earl is the brother of twin sisters Mrs. Edgar (Feme) Howatt of Westfield area and Mrs. Jim (Edna) Rudell of Sault Ste Marie, Ont., Slides shared with horticulturalists The September meeting of the Horticultural Society was held at the Community Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. President Anne Vincent welcomed all members and visitors. “O Canada” was sung with Phyllis Rodger as pianist. Dorothy Grange, the secretary, gave the minutes of the last meeting. The treasurer's report was given by Ell Lapp. Dorothy Grange read the correspondence. An invitation to Seaforth Horticultural Society, for Wednesday, Oct. 14 at the Public School was read. Maurice Bean gave an update on the hill project. Lois Haines donated bulbs to be planted in the fall on the hill. Joan Dougherty introduced the guest speaker and his wife Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Baptist of Teeswater, District Director of District 8. He spoke and showed slides of their Mizpah benediction read at WMS The September meeting of the Presbyterian W.M.S. was held at the home of Carole Daer. Martha Daer, the president, opened the meeting with a verse of “Show Me The Way”. Words of welcome were spoken. The devotional period was in charge of Lillian Letherland. The scripture portion was from Psalm 138 and was read alternately. The Dungannon boy dies A seven-year-old Dungannon boy died Sept. 7 after falling into an unused manure lagoon. Karl Ulch of RR 1, Dungannon was pronounced dead at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital after attempts to revive the boy failed. He'd been rushed to the hospital by Goderich Ambulance Services visited recently with their son, Gary at Glamis. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Siertsema who were married on Friday evening, Sept. 4. generosity of the Auburn and District Lions Club who provided a bus and driver, Lila McClinchey. another sister, Mrs. Isaac (Della) Nixon is deceased. Earl's youngest sister, Mrs. Orville (Mildred) Welsh, of Wingham performed as the minister in a humorous mock wedding. Earl and Ruth's great and great-great niece and nephews dressed in red and white, provided the music. The afternoon was enjoyed by playing games, contests and visiting. Guests travelled from Virden, Man., Goderich, Wingham, London, Belgrave, Sault Ste Marie, Ont., Brucefield, Elmira, Etobicoke, Blyth, Dungannon, Ripley and Donnybrook to extend their good wishes to the happy couple. trip to Germany, Holland, England and Scotland and a few pictures around Teeswater, one being of the log cabin owned by Robert Charter. Elliott Lapp thanked Gerald for his excellent slides. Shirley Archambault spoke on planting trees and shrubs and getting them ready for winter using plastic guards, mesh, hutches and burlap for protection. She explained the different kinds and answered questions . A lot of work went in to this display. She also had a contest on name the bulbs that were passed around which Norma Hazlitt won. Everyone sang Happy Birthday to Ann Vincent. There was an exchange of bouquets of flowers. The meeting closed with the singing of the Queen and a tasty lunch was served by the hostesses, Jean Plaetzer, Ila Cunningham and Tina Empey and a social time enjoyed. meditation was entitled “How do we answer God?” Marion Haggitt read the study on “Get up and Walk”. Readings were given by Frances Clark and Marion Haggitt. The Thanksgiving meeting will be at Martha Daer's home and will be taken from the “Glad Tidings”. The meeting closed with all repeating the Mizpah benediction. after falling into the lagoon which contained approximately five feet of run-off water. The lagoon was situated on a farm in Ashfield Twp, northeast of Kingsbridge. The boy's parents are Ron and Gail Ulch. Karl's funeral was held Sept. 10 with interment at Blyth Union Cemetery. Grandparents sing at Missionary church Aubum Missionary Church had a group of grandparents sing “Come Holy Spirit” on Sunday, Sept. 13 as it was Grandparents' Day. Pastor Carne's message “The Need for Renewal” was taken from Hebrews 4: 14-16; Hebrews 5: 7-14 and Hebrews 6: 1-12. The renewal of soul is just as important as renewal of body. If our body is not nourished we will die, so it is that we die spiritually if we are not renewed in Christ. We need help to live the Christian life. The devil tries to get us to give up but we need to know where to go and to whom we can go. People can hear the gospel, but Congregation recites Lord’s Prayer Rev. Paul Ross conducted the service at Knox United Church and Bernice Gross was organist. Rev. Ross gave the Invitation to Worship followed by the singing of “Come In, Come In and Sit Down You Are Part of the Family.” Hymn of Praise was “Jesus Loves Me This I Know”. Rev. Ross told the children's story and everyone repeated the Lord's Prayer. “Jesus Bids Us Shine” was sung. Hymn of Faith “Plenty of Room In The Family” followed. Rev. Ross's sermon was entitled “Welcome Mats”. The offering was received by Ken Ramsey and Ian Andrews and dedicated. Closing hymn was “Where Cross The Crowded Ways of Life.” Rev. Ross pronounced the Benediction. The U.C.W. will meet on Monday, Sept. 21 in the Church. The guest speaker will be Mrs. Jack Walker, West Huron Regional President. if they don't respond they will lose their ability to be renewed. Weakness gives way to willfulness. Be sure to attend the Blyth Crusade Sept. 27 - 30. Babysitting will be provided each evening.
