Feeding the masses takes a lot of guestimation
Each year thousands of people descend on
the Blyth fairgrounds to reminisce about old
times, and usually, in the course of all that
thinking, they get hungry.
How do you go about feeding thousands
of hungry people? Well, it takes a lot of
manpower, and good guestimation.
This year the Blyth Lions Club, the Blyth
Optimists, the Blyth Legion Ladies
Auxiliary, the Blyth and District Fire Dept.,
and the Huron County Museum will be
V*** B 'J
providing the throngs of hungry Thresher
enthusiasts with their much needed
sustenance under the support of the Huron
Pioneer Thresher Association.
This is only the second year that the
Optimists have had their food tent available,
so they are still experimenting with the
quantities of food that will be required. Jim
Phelan is the co-ordinator of the booth and
he says providing food at the Threshers'
Reunion is largely a guessing

game—
guesses have to be made concerning the
weather and the size of the crowd.
Last year the Optimists ordered the same
amount of food as the Lions food booth
ordered. Although many people were
concerned that this action would cut into the
Lions' business, the opposite proved to be
true as both clubs sold unprecedented
amounts of food.
Mr. Phelan relates that last year at the
Optimists' food booth they went through
over 100 pounds of hot dogs (about 1200 hot
dogs), 200 pounds of sausage (about 1000
sausages), 65 canisters of pop and 900
pounds of fresh cut french fries. He guesses
that approximately three or four thousand
people visited the booth during the five day
event.
Four to eight people man the Optimists'
booth at any one time depending on how
busy it is, declares Mr. Phelan. The busiest
time is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but there is
always business due to the large number of
campers that stay for the Reunion. Last year
there were over 500 campsites.
Beforehand, says Mr. Phelan, the
Optimists gel together to discuss how much
to order. They try to have enough supplies,
but if they happen to run short, they must
resort to local stores. Mr. Phelan expresses
that they try to order locally for this reason.
If it's a homemade, hot meal you're
looking for during your visit to the
Threshers' Reunion, then the Blyth Legion
Ladies Auxiliary has what you want.
Over the course of two days, the Legion
Ladies serve over 1000 hot meals in the
kitchen above the arena. This year they are
also opening a window in the arena that
serves soup, sandwiches, and pie for lunch.
All of the Legion Ladies' food is home-
prepared. They serve the hungry hoards on
the Friday and Saturday nights with a
smorgasbord. This year the table will be
laden with beef, Oktoberfest sausage, and
ham, plus a selection of vegetables and not
to mention over 150 homemade pies.
Mildred Ament, the food co-ordintor for
the Legion Ladies, declares that the
