Gas tractors
a nostalgic
display
For those of us bom after the "good old
days" of the gas engines we may look at
them and wonder what they were ever used
for. But it was through these heavy and
clumsy engines that today's lightweight, high
speed designs have evolved.
The exciting era of these old engines has
come and gone but for agriculture, the
gasoline engine was a major stimulant that
increased productivity with less manual
labour involved. Corn shellers, feed
grinders, threshers, saw rigs and a host of
other farm machines were powered by hand
or horsepower prior to the first engines.
Jack Henderson, of Vanastra is in charge
of the gas engines display at the Thresher
Reunion this year. This is his first year as
chairman of the exhibition.
Jack has been involved with the Huron
Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association for
the past eight years. He says he always went
to the show and after he retired he decided to
get involved and dabble with a few antiques.
Jack has several gas engines of his own;
including a Briggs and Straton, four
International one and a half to six
horsepower engines, a Stover, and a
Fairbanks-Morris. He has nine of these set
up on a trailer, one set on a truck, one
connected to a waterpump, and one to a air
compressor.
He also has two antique tractors in his
collection; a 1957 Oliver he originally
purchased as new, and a 1949 Pony Massey-
Harris.
