Farm toy collectibles a growing trend Models and "farm loy"collectibles have become a steadily growing hobby that continues to rise in popularity. Collectors collect for as many different reasons as there are models to collect; some are merely seeking financial investments, while others are trying to recapture those fading treasures of their youth. The models displayed at the Thresher Reunion has not only continued to grow in size and popularity, but it has been attracting a whole 'new breed' of participants to the annual event says Michael Andrews who is in charge of the model display this year. He has been involved with the Thresher Reunion for as long as he can remember, referring to it as "a kind of family thing" since his father and grandfather are both members. For the past four or five years, Michael has become actively involved in the Reunion activities. He says there has always been a positive response in the past towards the model displays, and this year he expects about 18 people displaying their various model collections. It will basically be the same as last year, he says, with the larger scale steam and working machinery models outside and the old antique tools and smaller scale tractors housed inside one of the steel sheds. Although they are often called "toys", many of the miniature equipment models are actually extremely accurate and detailed blueprint replicas of their real life counterparts. Many of the "tiny" models also include operating and functional components, quite similar to their "larger" counterparts. Although he doesn't have a model collection of his own, Michael says his family has been involved in collecting the big steam engines, threshing machines and the old gas tractors for years. He has a restored antique John Deere tractor of his own. He believes the reason the Blyth Thresher Reunion has grown over the years, more so than any other steam show going, can be attributed to the continuing expansions and tiie introduction of new ideas and events. Antique cars bring back the old days Remember the first car you ever drove, or that old ' classic" you always wanted to own? Chances are you'll find it on display, row upon row of gleaming memories from yesteryear, at the "^rena" ball diamond during the annual Thresher Reunion. Bill Crawford of RR 2, Clinton is once again in charge of the antique car display. Although he doesn't own one himself, this is the fourth year in a row he has had the privilege of organizing the exhibition. Since the car displays are not pre registered, Bill says, you never really know how many are going to show up until they pull in. "It's kinda of always a surprise to me," he says, "we just take what comes into the compound." The car display however, he says, has been basically growing every year. This can largely be attributed to the inclusion of the "classic" 1960's and 1970's vehicles which are a little more available to the hobbiest than the antique automobile. An antique is classified as any automobile over 30 years of age. The centre of the "arena" ball diamond is reserved for the true antiques, Bill says, the rows for the classics form around the outfield. The judging categories for the antique automobiles are prewar (before the 1940's) and post war (1946 to 1960). In past years, Bill has had up to 80 automobiles on display each day, some leaving to be replaced by others. This year, he says, hopefully, there will be about the same number of entries, if not more.
