Optimists plan events for kids
For the second year in a row, while Mom
ano Dad are busy taking in all the interesting
sights at the Thresher Reunion the children
will have their own special events beginning
at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Last year the newly organized Blyth
Optimist Club was looking for a way to offer
its services to the Thresher committee and
the idea of hosting children's events seemed
a logical one as the club motto is "Friend of
Youth".
Jeff Peters, organizer of the children's
activities this year says that while many
details are not final as yet, he expects the big
event this year will be the tractor pull due to
the huge participation last year. Estimating
that about 40 children took part he says this
year there will be more age categories in the
hope of making it more competitive. Tractor
pull winners will get vouchers to the
Optimist food booth, he said, in addition to
all participants receiving ribbons.
The other events, open to anyone under
the age of 15 will include bag tieing, nail
hammering and bale toss.
The inclusion of the children's events has
been a welcome addition to the Thresher
Reunion. Last year’s special events organizer
Ray Hallahan noted that the committee has
always tried to keep the gate price down to
encourage families to attend. With the
addition of the children's games in the many
activities offered at the Reunion there is now
something for everyone.

Event a learning experience
There is no question that for older people
the Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion has
good entertainment value and offers them an
opportunity to relive many moments from
the past. What is often overlooked is the
educational merit of the Reunion, though not
by the Thresher committee, which this year
has put together a package for schools
inviting them to bring their students to tour
the event and learn some wonderful
historical and scientific data.
Blyth resident and Hullett Central Public
School teacher Dave Medd has for several
years been bringing his class to the Thresher
Reunion. "It began about six years ago when
I was teaching in Belgrave," he said. "Then
when I began teaching in Colbome I brought
my classes from there."
Though this is the first year the Thresher
committee has decided to appoint an
education Chairperson, which is Mr. Medd,
last year a total of six elementary schools in
close proximity to Blyth brought busloads of
students, about 250 children, to tour the
event on the Friday. This year, Mr. Medd
has put together a package, which he is
distributing to the elementary schools in
Huron, stating the educational benefits of the
Thresher Reunion to young people. Schools
will get sample questions and guidelines
noting the science, social studies, historical
and pioneer unit highlights.
The package is supported by the Huron
County Board of Education.
Students will be able to enjoy the many
demonstrations, such as threshing, log
sawing and stooking and will be given
opportunities to talk with the operators of the
steam engines and gas tractors.
Also this year, Mr. Medd's Grade seven
class from Hullett will be looking after a
sports competition program, featuring such
interesting activities as a nail driving contest,
tug-of-war, woodpiling and rooster crowing.
After giving it a trial run this year, Mr.
Medd is hoping that next year he can come
up with a more thorough package so teachers
can have it immediately.
Mr. Medd is enthusiastic about the
educational value that students can
experience at the Reunion. It fits in with
many of their studies, he says, adding "and
the best thing of all is that it's close and it's
free."
