Women's Month
Continued from page 9
the Status of Women, declared
October as Women's History
Month in Canada to recognize the
contributions of women, past and
present, from all walks of life, who
influenced the development of our
nation. The idea of Women’s
History Month was suggested to
Minister Collins by women's
organizations and by women
representing the academic
community.
The month of October was
chosen to coincide with the
anniversary of the “Persons Case”,
a lengthy legal and political effort
by five women which led to
Canadian women being officially
declared “persons” on October 18,
1929. As Nellie McClung, one of
the major players in the “Persons
Case”, said, “people must know the
past to understand the present and
face the future.”
Across the country, in October,
events are being organized to
applaud the accomplishments of
women in Canada. Discover the
women who had an impact on your
community and capture their
stories.

terns can also increase or decrease

Mr. Speiser showed a new vege
tation detecting metering system
that is mounted in front of a sprayer
nozzle and through infrared light
reading, determines where there is
vegetation that needs to be sprayed,
switching off the nozzle when there
is no vegetation to be sprayed.
There are difficulties with the sys
tem, he said. The meters can fog in
heat changes, meaning they don't
read as accurately. They can't work
at night and in the shade of a tractor
cab they may not read vegetation as
accurately. Still, he said, in tests in
the Rondeau Bay area, they showed
savings of 30 per cent in chemicals.
At $1000 per meter, per tip, howev
er, it takes a lot of spraying to earn
back the money, he said.

going through.
Average annual rainfall is 85 cm.
Dr. Kachanowski said, but evapo
ration and plant needs take up only
65 cm. It leaves an excess 20 cm or
six inches of rainfall that has to go
somewhere, either through run-off
or through drainage systems to
creeks and rivers; or into the
ground water.
The limit of allowable nitrates for
water to be drinkable is only 10
parts per million (ppm). It takes
only an excess of 20 pounds of
nitrogen per acre, converted to
nitrates and picked up by the water,
to create undrinkable water. "If
your fields are losing only 20
pounds (of nitrogen), the water is
not fit for drinking. That's why
we're concerned that the amount of
nitrogen (you're putting on the
field) is the amount you need."
Dr. Kachanowski stressed that he
wasn't speaking out against chemi
cal fertilizer application. Nitrogen
management is a problem for both
high intensive and organic farming;
with chemical fertilizer application,
manure application, even legume
crops that put nitrogen into the soil.
In fact the worst leaching of
nitrates was probably on plowed-
down alfalfa with a manure appli
cation. Organic nitrogen from
manure or plant material in the soil
may be the worst problem because
it breaks down into nitrogen all
year long, even when the crops
aren't using nitrogen, creating an
excess that can get into the water
table. Perhaps the ideal, for nitro
gen management to prevent leach
ing into groundwater would be to
have a soil with no natural nitrogen
where chemical applications only
gave the plants enough nitrogen for
their needs, when it was needed.
Because nitrogen doesn't move
through the soil but must be in the
root zone to be used by the plant,
banding of nitrogen right in the
root zone can maximize the bene
fits with the fewest side effects.
Some people are even working on
two nitrogen applications for com
at different stages of growth to give
the crop a shot when it most needs
it. Still, seeing the problem is easi
er than finding a solution. "In Eng
land they had come to the
conclusion that it is impossible to
have water of drinking quality
below agricultural land," Dr.
Kachanowski said.
