The Grand
announces
design team
Martha Henry, artistic director of
The Grand Theatre, announced the
design teams for The Grand's
twentieth anniversary season on
Aug. 12. Returning designers
include: Astrid Janson, John
Munro, John Thompson, Debra
Hanson, Christine Plunkett and
Lesley Wilkinson. In addition,
designers Charlotte Dean, Michael
J. Whitfield and Ange Zhang will
be making their Grand Theatre
debuts during 1992-93.
Sets and costumes for The
Grand's season opener, The Dining
Room, will be designed by Astrid
Janson with lighting designed by
John Munro. Ms. Janson's most
recent Grand credits include sets
and costumes for the 1989-90
season productions of Women In
Mind, Farther West and Fire, as
well as The Grand's 1989 landmark
production of Blood Relations. Ms
Janson will return later in the
season to design both set and
costumes for the world premiere of
Timothy Findley's new play, The
Stillborn Lover. Mr. Munro will be
remembered by Grand theatre
goers for his remarkable lighting
design for A Walk In The Woods
last season.
The set for the musical version of
A Christmas Carol will be designed
by John Thompson, who will also
be returning to The Grand for his
third season as the Technical
Director for the McManus Studio.
The world premiere stage
adaptation of What Ever Happened
to Baby Jane? will feature set and
costume designs by Debra Hanson,
Head of Design for the Stratford
Festival. Ms Hanson designed the
sets and costumes for The Grand's
production of Shirley Valentine last
season.
Christine Plunkett, set and
costume designer for last season's
production of Snowsuits, Birthdays
and Giants presented in the
McManus, will return to design the
costumes for A Moon For The
Misbegotten. This production will
mark John Munro's third and final
lighting design of the season.
Lesley Wilkinson returns to
London design lighting for Italian
American Reconciliation. Ms
Wilkinson, with Robert Thomson,
designed the lighting for The
Grand's production of Pump Boys
and Dinettes in 1986.
The next time you have to unclog
a drain, try using baking soda and
vinegar instead of corrosive drain
cleaners. Pour 124 ml. of the
baking soda down the drain, then
follow it with 125 ml. of vinegar
and cover with the stopper. It
works like a charm.
The Enviro Dial, put out by the
Ontario Waste Management
Corporation (OWMC), gives
environmentally safe alternatives
for 36 types of products commonly
used in the home, garden, garage
and workshop. For example, to
make a non-toxic wood polish, mix
one part lemon juice with two parts
olive or vegetable oil and polish
with a soft cloth. Rub toothpaste on
the wood to get rid of water marks.
To freshen the air in your home,
place a bowl of vinegar or an open
box or baking soda in each room.
The Enviro Dial, which is
available in French and English,
also gives helpful information on
handling, storing and disposing of
hazardous products.
“People are constantly asking us
what they can do to help the
environment,” says OWMC's Tracy
Patterson, incy <uc looking for
practical waste management
information hey can put to use in
the home.”
The Enviro Dial costs $2 with
discounts for orders of 26 or more.
To order, call or write the Ontario
Waste Management Corporation, 2
Bloor St. West, 11 th Floor,
Toronto, Ont. M4W 3E2.
OWMC is a provincial Crown
agency with responsibilities for the
reduction, treatment and disposal of
hazardous wastes.
Newcomers to The Grand
include Charlotte Dean, who will
be making her Grand debut with
her costume designs for A
Christmas Carol, and who will also
design both set and costumes for
Italian American Reconciliation
later in the season. Stratford
Festival's Resident Lighting
Designer Michael J. Whitfield will
design the lighting for What Ever
Happened To Baby Jane? and
Ange Zhang will design the set for
A Moon For The Misbegotten.
