Tigers clinch first place Brussels Mites win (B’ Neither miserable weather nor stiff competition could hold back the Brussels Boys Mite White team as they came back from a Friday night loss to become the "B" play off tournament champs in Listowel on Saturday. The team, who came into the tournament in third position, behind Seaforth and Listowel, faced off against Fordwich in the first game. Though they got off to a solid start strong defense through out the game cancelled some rather impressive hitting. They lost the 11-7 in this double knock-out putting them into the first round of competition for the consolation side. Rain delayed the start on Satur day against Winthrop, but pressure didn't affect the Brussels team which came on like gangbusters annihilating Winthrop 14-4. The second game on Saturday saw them against Fordwich again. Coach Alan Walker said, "This was a really good game. The boys dug down deep." A last inning grand slam by Jason Armstrong knocked in the winning run in this tight game for a final score of 15-14 for Brussels. Things changed in the final con frontation with Fordwich, however, with the Brussels Mites overpower ing them to a 17-7 win and the "B" title. Mr. Walker said it was a well- deserved win for a team that worked really hard. "They played really well and it was nice to walk away with the "B" side win." Mr. Walker was assisted this year by Don Ruttan and Murray Kellington. The team received a trophy and crests and plan to celebrate their successful season at a party later this month. Members of the team are: Paul Albers, Jason Armstrong, Nathan Conley, Mark Franken, Nathan Garland, Patrick Gilkes, Joshua Gropp, Chris Holdenmeyer, Josh Jorritsma, Joel Kellington, Mark Kroll, Matthew Kroll, Justin Ruttan and Michael Walker. The Mites Red team will be com peting in a playoff tournament in Belgrave this weekend. Belgrave team wins 2 The July 25 game in Belgrave against the home Squirts and Blyth turned into a hit-fest with a total 36 runs scored. The Belgrave team edged out the visitors by 20-16. The visitors came up with four runs in the first, but Belgrave answered back with seven. Michael Sanders, Brian Sanders, Ryan Fear, Robbie McGee, Justin Campbell, Jeremy Campbell and Tom Pfeiffer crossed the plate for Belgrave. Both teams scored three in the second with Michael Sanders, Ryan Fear and Robbie McGee getting the points. Blyth couldn't come up with any runs in the next inning, but Jamie McCallum gave Belgrave more insurance with his third inning home run. Blyth owned the fourth however, scoring seven run to Belgrave's four. Jamie McCallum hit a grand slam, bringing home Michael McBurney, Robbie McGee and Justin Campbell. The next inning saw Belgrave take control again, holding Blyth to one run, while adding five to their score. Crossing the plate for the home team were: Brian Sanders, Michael McBurney, Robbie McGee, Justin Campbell and Jere my Campbell. Blyth added one more run in the sixth. It was a team effort that earned the win as Belgrave Squirts defeat ed Fordwich 7-3 at a home game on July 30. Justin Campbell scored the only runs in the first and third inning, while the visitors were shut out by Jeremy Campbell. Both teams remained scoreless through the next two then Belgrave widened their margin in the six by a whopping five runs. Jamie McCallum, Jeremy Campbell, Michael McBurney, Marc Alexander and Ryan Fear crossed the plate. The year-end tournament will be in Wingham on Aug. 15. The Brussels Tigers clinched first place in Huron County Fastball action with an 8-3 win over the Clinton Selects. Todd Uhrig hit four for four while Dave Smith pitched five solid innings for the decision. The first place finish is the first ever in the 10 year history of the Tigers, who played in the W.O.A.A. and Bluewater Leagues before joining the Huron County league last season. The Tigers participated in the 21st annual Brussels' Fastball Blyth Atoms end regular soccer season The Blyth Atom soccer team played host to the Goderich United team on Aug. 4. Goderich put the pressure on right away but Blyth's goalie, Peter Nonkes, made some good saves. Goderich did manage a one goal lead by the end of the first half. Early in the second half Goderich got their second goal, then Blyth got on the score board as Jeremy Van Amersfoort beat the keeper from a pass from Matt Anderson. Blyth hit the goal post a couple of times but could not increase their score. Goderich scored one more to end the game at 3-1. This game ended the schedule for the atoms. They enjoyed a good season with eight wins and four losses. They scored 46 goals and had 18 scored against them. Due to the rain, the year end tournament for the atom and mosquito team was cancelled and re-scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15. PEE WEE On Aug. 5 the Blyth pee wee team travelled to Newton. This was an exciting game with play going back and forth. By the end of the first half, Newton was ahead by two goals. In the second half Blyth came back with two goals, the first one by Kevin Campbell, set up by Rolf Fresehknect and Becky Morrison. The second was put in by Rolf, assisted by Brad and Lindsay Anderson. Newton scored again and the .final score was 4-2 for Newton. Ron Rinn played well in goal. Special mention to the Newton team who are always enjoyable to play against. They will come to Belgrave on Aug. 12 to play the final game of the season. Tournament with disappointing results. A Brussels team has captured a championship only once - Ritchie's Rockets were “B” Division champs in 1973 - although the Jr. Tigers did reach the consolation final in 1984 only to lose to Sebringille. Brussels opened with a 10-1 loss to the Shakespeare Colts. Todd Uhrig singled home Murray Pipe in the fourth for the Tigers' only run. Game two saw Brussels come from behind to edge the Mitchell HURON COUNTY LEAGUE STANDINGS NORTH:PTS. In consolation semi-final action Brussels jumped quickly into a 3-0 first inning lead, before the Fullarton A's rebounded for a 7-3 win to eliminate the Tigers. Fullarton advanced to the “B” Division final where they were defeated 5-3 by K-W Pride. Shakespeare captured the “A” Division Championship with a 10-4 win over the Mitchell Mets.
