Vaulter aims high

took Doug under his wing.
Simpson was soon replaced as
Doug's coach by Zedenek Krykora,
a Czechoslovakian native.
Doug has set seven Canadian
records, but points out the world
record stands at 6 mil by Russian
(Ukrainian) Sergei Bubka.
Having received permission from
the Canadian authorities, Doug did
not attend the opening ceremonies
at the Olympics. If he had, then it
would have been 10 days before he
had the opportunity to jump.
Instead the pole vaulter was trying
to arrange attendance at another
meet in Europe for competition
level practice.
Doug will jump Aug. 5, with the
final round slated for Aug. 7.

Quick start wins soccer team game
Blyth Atom soccer team hosted
the Wingham team on July 27.
Blyth got off to a quick start,
with Matt Anderson scoring on a
penalty shot. The second goal was
set up by Matt to send David
Ansley scoring on a break away.
Blyth scored again as Michelle
McNichol made a perfect pass to
Jeremy VanAmersfoort who fed it
to David for Blyth's third goal.
Jeremy scored the fourth goal
unassisted.
Wingham got their only goal
early in the second half. Blyth
continued scoring when David got
a breakaway from a throw in by
Jeremy. Darwin Buffmga made a
nice pass to Jeremy who beat the
goalie for his second of the game.
With only seconds left in the game
Wesley Beacom got a short, strong
kick away from a pass from Matt.
Blyth won the game 7-1.
Again Blyth had a good turnout
and all players played well. The
year-end tournament for Atoms and
Mosquitoes will be on August 8 in
Goderich. Both teams play theii
first game at 9 a.m. Come out and
support your local team.
