Albion receives grant of $30,000 Class of 1924 The SS No. 7 Cranbrook school class of 1924 held a reunion on Saturday at the home of John Perrie of RR 3 Brussels. In attendance were, from left to right, Lydia Maguire, John Perrie, Edith Hayden, and Irene MacDonald. Class of ’24 holds reunion BY CHRISTINA ROULSTON Many of us have problems keep ing up with school chums we have known from just a few years ago. Can you imagine keeping in touch with friends from 68 years ago? Friends from the SS No. 7 Cran brook school's class of 1924 have been keeping in contact with each other since their graduation. Satur day, Aug. 1, they held a reunion at the home of John Perrie of RR 3, Brussels. Only three ladies from the origi nal class of 12 were able to attend since most have deceased or are unable to travel. Lydia (nee Jeschke) Maguire from Detroit, Edith (nee Gorsalitz) Hayden from Gorrie, and Irene (nee Dunn) Mac Donald of Listowel were in atten dance at the little get-together at Mr. Perrie's house. Mr. Perrie's son David and his daughter-in-law Joan helped host the reunion and serve the guests dinner. Mrs. Maguire had the idea to hold this particular reunion—the group has had them before. The 1924 graduates were the largest class to graduate from the SS No. 7 Cranbrook school. There were six boys and six girls in all. Mrs. Maguire went on to be a teacher in Detroit for many years. Mr. Perrie farmed near Cranbrook all his life. Mrs. MacDonald, who was originally from Saskatchewan, became a nurse and farmed. Mrs. Hayden, who declares her secret desire was always to become an accountant, was a housewife and farmer for many years. All the graduates are now over 80 years of age, but their wit and charm reveals them to be much younger at heart. MPP Paul Klopp (MPP Huron) announced July 23, on behalf of Ontario Minister of Culture and Communications Karen Haslam, a grant of $30,000 for the restoration of the historic Albion Hotel in Bayfield. The grant will be used to restore the historic cedar shingle roof, verandah and wood storm windows and repair the brickwork on the front elevation. “Preserving our heritage buildings intimately connects us with our past,” says Ms. Haslam. “We are privileged to have the opportunity to pass on this cultural legacy to future generations.” The Albion Hotel is part of a designated heritage district in Bayfield. It is located at the south end of the Main Street where it serves as a handsome introduction to the street. The original hotel built in 1840 was half the size of the present structure. In 1856, an addition was built to the south. Later, in 1902, an ornate verandah with carved pillars, rails and spools was added where pations could sit and watch passers-by. “Heritage conservation has never been more crucial than it is today,” said Klopp. “Through restoration projects such as this one. we are doing more than remembering our past. We are using it to give us inspiration and guidance for the future.” The grant is awarded under the ministry's Commercial Rehabili tation Program. These grants arc available for the conservation of privately-owned commercial and industrial properties that have been designated under the Ontario Heritage and that will be used for commercial, industrial or multiple unit residential purposes.
