Blyth Mosquitoes host Goderich team
Blyth Mosquito soccer team
played host to Goderich
McDonald's on July 13 in
Belgrave. These two teams were a
very close match as throughout the
first half both teams had many
scoring chances.
Belgrave Squirts win 3
The Belgrave Squirts played host
to Brussels on July 18, but showed
no mercy as they defeated the visi
tors 14-7.
The visitors got the ball rolling in
the first with two runs, but Bel
grave answered back in their half
when Tom Pfeiffer, Justin Camp
bell and Robbie McGee crossed the
home plate.
Brussels tied the score in the sec
ond with one run. Then Michael
McBumey, Tom Pfeiffer, Justin
Campbell and Robbie McGee pro
vided some insurance runs for the
home team.

Tigers in first place
The Brussels Tigers continue to
hold first place in Huron County
fastball action with a 16-3-1 record
after weekend play.
Wednesday night, behind a 10
strikeout performance by Todd
Uhrig, the Tigers edged their arch
rivals from Walton by a 2-1 score.
Brussels scored both runs on
sacrifice flies in the fourth and
sixth innings for a 2-0 lead heading
into Walton's last at bat. There,
with two out and runners on third
and second, a drive into right field
scored the lead runner but in
dramatic game ending fashion
Doug Conley gunned down the
second runner at the plate for the
win.

Best helmets bear CSA mark
With mandated use of cycling
helmets being suggested by the
Government of Ontario, it is
important to note that Canada has
an excellent national standard for
this vital safety item. Buyers
should be looking for a helmet that
carries the Canadian Standards
Association certification mark.
With a tired bunch to revive at
half time and a few words of
encouragement, Blyth and the
opposition played it tough again
and Blyth got on the scoreboard
first as Brad Mason passed to April
Van Amersfoort, who somehow put
die1 third inning, but were answered
back by the Belgrave bats. Jason
McBumey, Michael McBumey and
Tom Pfeiffer scored the runs.
Belgrave lost some steam the
next two innings with Marc
Alexander getting the only run,
while Brussels drove home one in
each. Brussels got another run in
the sixth, but Belgrave came on
with the power again scoring three
more. Jeremy Campbell, Jamie
McCallum and Marc Alexander
scored.
It was an even greater upset on
July 22 when the Belgrave team
travelled to Blyth and trounced
6-run lead in losing to the Exeter
Sooners 9-7. Brussels scored
quickly when Doug Conley cleared
the left field fence for a two run
shot in the first, added a single in
the third and three in the fourth for
a 6-0 lead. Exeter fought back with
six in the fifth, one in the sixth,
then broke a seven-all tie with two
in their last at bat for the win. Doug
Conley took the loss despite going
three for four at the plate as did
Ken Higgins and Paul Thompson.
Brussels travels to Clinton
Wednesday night to end their
regular although three cancelled
games may have to be played.

it over the goal line past a
sprawling goal tender. Goderich
came back to tie the game but were
denied the goal because of too
many players on the field.
Blyth pushed on for the second
them 18-2.
Ryan Fear's run in the first went
unanswered by the home team, then
Belgrave pulled out all stops in the
second scoring seven. Marc
Alexander, Robbie McGee, Peter
Irwin, Michael Sanders, Brian
Sanders, Ryan Fear and Michael
McBumey crossed the plate.
The score remained the same in
the third with both teams getting
shutout, then Belgrave came back
to repeat the second with another
seven runs scored. This time Rob
bie McGee, Peter Irwin, Michael
Sanders, Ryan Fear, Michael
McBurney, Justin Campbell and
Tom Pfeiffer came home. Blyth
were held back to one run this
inning, giving Belgrave a huge
lead.
Then Marc Alexander, Robbie
McGee and Michael Sanders
chalked up three more for Bel
grave. Blyth scored one more run
in their half.
Jeremy Campbell did an excel
lent job on the mound striking out
11 and walking only one.
The story was different again as a
more closely matched Gowanstown
team came to Belgrave.
The visitors struck early with
three runs in the first. Michael
McBumey and Tom Pfeiffer short
ened the lead. Gowanstown got an
insurance run in the second but this
was answered back by Michael
Sanders.
In the third, Gowanstown lost
their edge scoring only three to
Belgrave's seven. Crossing the
plate for the home team were: Tom -
Pfeiffer, Justin Campbell, Jeremy
Campbell, Robbie McGee, Marc
Alexander, Ryan Fear and Jason
McBumey.
It was Gowanstown's turn in the
fourth as they narrowed the lead by
scoring five runs. Belgrave's
Michael McBumey, Tom Pfeiffer
and Justin Campbell crossed the
plate for Belgrave that inning giv
ing them a one run lead.
Shutting out the Gowanstown
team in the fifth Michael Sanders
hit a home run. Then Jason McBur
ney and Michael McBumey added
some more insurance.
The Gowanstown team made
things a little tense in the sixth
scoring two more, but it wasn't
enough as Belgrave edged them 16-
14.
goal of the game with Michael
Ansley and April Van Amersfoort
setting up Matthew Morrison to
beat the keeper. Goderich did get
on the scoreboard with about 30
seconds left in the game.
This was a game well played by
both teams. All players played hard
and there was good sportsmanship
shown.
Special mention to Adam Blair
who made some very professional
saves.
The year end soccer tournament
is scheduled for August 8 in
Goderich for Mosquito and Atom
teams.
On July 22, the Mosquitoes
played the Lucknow Cougars in
Wingham.
It took Blyth a while to get
started but once they got on the
scoreboard the goals added up fast.
Jeff Cowan and Michael Courtney
set up April Van Amersfoort for the
first goal. Minutes later, Michael
Ansley assisted Amanda Anderson

seven wins, one tie, and two losses,
35 goals for and 16 goals against.
PEEWEES
On July 15, Brussels Peewee
team came to Belgrave to take on
the Blyth squad. Both teams played
well and kept the score at 0 in the
first half.
Early in the second half Brussels
took the lead. Blyth kept working
hard and Kurt Lentz set up Brad
Anderson for a goal. With just 30
seconds left in the game, Brussels
scored for the win.
The CSA mark is found on
cycling helmets that comply with
CSA Standard D. 113.2. Over a
dozen models of helmets, in
various sizes, have been certified to
this safety standard. The CSA
standard applies to helmets for
cyclists aged five years and older.
Requirements for a helmet's
impact-absorbing qualities, chin
strap strength and the minimum
area of the head to be covered by
the helmet are specified in the
standard.
“The CSA standard is stricter
than either of the U.S. cycling
helmet standards,” states Michael
Lewis, Director of Communi
cations for the Canadian Standards
Association. “If a helmet meets the
CSA standard, it's a better helmet
as far as protection goes.”
Every year across Canada, many
people ... especially children ... are
seriously injured or killed while
cycling because they don’t wear
cycling helmets. Most of these
