DANGEROUS
TOY!
NO2 may be visible as a
yellowish-brown haze within a
few hours of silo filling. A bleach
like odor is a definite indicator of
silo gas danger. Dead flies and
birds at the base of a silo also
suggest the likely presence of
toxic gas.
All silos must be declared off
limits for at least three weeks
after filling. Emergency entry
should only be attempted by
trained personnel wearing self-
contained breathing equipment.
All rules for confined space entry
must be followed to the letter.
You are dealing with a deadly
environment!
Keep silos safe and serviceable
Excessive crop moisture levels encourage
seepage, which increases the damaging
effects of silage acids.
