F arm ODHIC holds award night The Ontario Dairy Herd Improvement Corporation held their Huron County Milk Record­ ing awards for 1991 in conjunction with the Huron County Holstein Club's twilight meeting, Friday, July 17 on the farm of Jim Halla- han, RR 3 Blyth. Huron County Dairy Princess Morgan Murray was on hand to present the cow production awards for 1991. Leo Miltenburg, of Lucknow was presented with a trophy and desk pen set for greatest production increase. Desk pen sets also went to Allan Martin, of Listowel for highest herd BCA, Lyle Martin,of Ethel for runner up in the highest herd BCA, and John Brand of RR 3, Clinton for the breeding efficien­ cy award. First place in the yearling class went to John Brand, of RR 3, Clin­ ton, while second went to Bart Scherpenzeel of Gorrie. John H. Oldfield, of Seaforth won first place in the two-year-old class, second went to Leo Mil­ tenburg of Lucknow. Both first and second place in the three-year-old class went to Allan - Martin of Listowel. Allan Martin also won first place in the four-year-class, second place went to Francis Van Drunen of Seaforth. Joe B. Winkel, of Fordwich won first place in the five-year-old class, Fred Meir, of Brussels, took sec­ ond. In the mature class, J. and F. Wiersma, of Blyth won first place, while Jim L. Ginn took second. Ray Devereaux, of Seaforth won first place in the new granny cate­ gory, while Lyle Martin of Ethel took second. Cows in this category must be nine years plus to be eligi­ ble. The market at Brussels Livestock saw cattle selling under pressure at $1 lower from previous week. Cows were $1 higher with a very active trade, There were 601 steers on offer selling from $72 to $92.50 to the high of $96.50. Sixty steers consigned by W. B. Pletch Co. Ltd., Rockwood averaging 1250 lbs. sold for an average of $90.19 with sales to $96.50 and were purchased by Star Brand Packers. Fourteen steers consigned by Woodham Farms, Woodham averaging 1106 lbs. sold for an average of $84.95 with sales to $94. Thirty-eight steers consigned by Gerald Geisel, Elmira averaging 1460 lbs. sold for an average of $86.92 with sales to $92. Six steers consigned by Jim Howatt, Londesborough averaging 1333 lbs. sold for an average of $90.36 with sales to $91.35 Seventeen steers consigned by Doug Gear, Orton averaging 1336 lbs. sold for an average of $90.46 with sales to $91.30. Six steers consigned by Russel Kernighan, Goderich averaging 1290 lbs. sold for an average of $85.66 with sales to $91. Four steers consigned by Mike Dalton, Goderich averaging 1170 lbs. sold for an average of $88.80 with sales to $90.90. Seventeen steers consigned by Keith Johnston, Bluevale averaging 1204 lbs. sold for an average of $88.01 with sales to $90.25. Fourteen steers consigned by Bray ford Fur Farm, Alliston, averaging 1397 lbs. sold for an average of $88.48 with sales to $90.25. Ten steers consigned by Miller Farms, Moorefield averaging 1337 lbs. sold for an average of $87.49 with sales to $90.10. Twelve Holstein steers consigned by Dale and John Taylor Farms, Creemore averaging 1483 lbs. sold for $77. There were 397 heifers on offer selling from $75.50 to $91.80 to the high of $101.50. Forty-six heifers consigned by G. A. Stewart Farms, Ripley averaging 1022 lbs. sold for an average of $89.73 with sales to $101.50 and were purchased by Norwich Packers. Six heifers consigned by Wm. Bennett & Sons Farms Ltd., Gorrie averaging 1157 lbs. sold for an average of $93.55 with sales to $95.25. Seven heifers consigned by Glen Johnston, Bluevale averaging 1021 lbs. sold for an average of $88.63 with sales to $91.75. Fifteen heifers consigned by Muxlea, Woodstock,-averaging 1235 lbs. sold for an average of $88.26 with sales to $91.25. Nine heifers consigned by Lome Hackett, Lucknow averaging 1061 lbs. sold for an average of $87.35 with sales to $90.90. Five heifers consigned by Neil Rintoul, Lucknow averaging 1194 lbs. sold for an average of $87.61 with sales to $90. Seven heifers consigned by Fred Middleton, Clinton averaging 1083 lbs. sold for an average of $83.34 with sales to $90. Seven heifers consigned by Harold Zettler, Teeswater averaging 1016 lbs. sold for an average of $89.17 with sales to $89.50. Eight heifers consigned by John Hunter, Grand Valley averaging 1064 lbs. sold for an average of $86.34 with sales to $88.50. There were 229 cows on offer selling from $55 to $65.75 to the high of $71.50. One cow consigned by Ken Marks, Belgrave weighing 1170 lbs. sold for $71.50. Three cows consigned by Fred Fiss, Dobbinton, averaging 1430 lbs. sold for an average of $66.23 with sales to $69. Two cows consigned by John Gillis, Brussels averaging 1047 lbs. sold for an average of $69.04 with sales to $69.50 Five cows consigned by Dave Elphick, Lucknow averaging 1462 lbs. sold for an average of $65.17 with sales to $67.75. There were 196 veal on offer selling from $68 to $80 to the high of $94. Centralia College presents Enviro Camp, a new summer day camp geared to children ages 10-12. Laurie Forrester, a student working at Centralia College this summer, has organized an interesting and educational program. Campers will participate in many activities such as a pond and stream study, an orienteering session, a tour of a recycling plant and various outdoor activities. Campers will also prepare their own lunches. The date for Enviro Camp is July 28, 29 & 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cost of the camp, including lunch, is $50 plus GST.
