West Wawanosh Choir entertains for 125th The West Wawanosh Homecom ing committee is gearing up for the festivities starting on July 24 and carrying on through to July 26. Walter Elliott, a Homecoming committee member, says things are going "very good" so far. The only thing they don't have control over is the "man in the sky", but they plan to carry on no matter what the weather produces. "There's a building or two and the school on Sunday," says Mr. Elliott. "I think we can accommo date everyone." As part of the activities on Sun day, the West Wawanosh Home- coming choir will give a performance during the church ser vice at 10:30 a.m. at the Brookside Public School. The choir is directed by renowned opera singer Renee Stal enhoef. About 40 members make up the choir and have been practic ing a selection of hymns for the past six weeks. Dungannon's 1868 oil boom The village of Dungannon, host town for the 125 celebrations in West Wawanosh Township, is the proud possessor of a rich history filled with many an entertaining story. On the Wawanosh town line, nine miles from Lucknow and 13 from Goderich, this village was laid out by Mr. William Mallough in 1855, and named by him in honour of the borough town of the same name in County Tyrone, Ireland were Mr. Mallough originated from. The first store was started in 1854 by Robert Clendenning. In 1852 a post office was opened a short distance south of the present village under the name of Wawanosh, but on the surveying of Dungannon, it was removed to that place and assumed the village name. The mail connection was fur nished by a stage making daily trips between Goderich and Lucknow by the year 1879. Also at that time, the village con tained three general stores, besides shoe shops, a tin shop, two hotels, a large carriage shop, two hotels, a large carriage shop, a steam grist and sawmill, a telegraph office and three churches — Canadian Methodist, Presbyterian and Epis copal. One of the amusing stories of Dungannon concerns an oil boom. In the spring of 1868, two men were busy digging a water well on a farm a mile south of the village of Dungannon. For days, young and old from the village and the sur rounding countryside would stop by the site to check on the progress Continued on page 16 West Wawa Twp well Continued from page 14 beginning of the present year. Its share of the Municipal Loan Fund Surplus was $12,511.14, less a proportionate share to Lucknow for the territory taken out of Wawanosh by that village, and this was applied to the redemption of outstanding debentures issued in aid of the Wellington, Grey, and Bruce South Extension; the amount of those debentures originally issued being $18,000. The “West supplied with schools Wawanosh Mutual Fire Insurance Company,” which was organized under the recent Insurance Act, has its head office in St. Helens, and its three chief officers are Chas. Girvin, President; Thomas E. Finley, Vice-President; Robert Murray, Secretary-Treasurer. This township is specially well supplied with schools, and the intelligence of its people furnishes ample proof that they have been put to good use.
