Country Playhouse Artistic Director dies Tony Lloyd, artistic director at the Huron Country Playhouse passed away suddenly July 7, 1992. At this time, the cause of death seems to have been a massive stroke. Lloyd had just directed his 200th show, The Sound Of Music, which over a fivc-wcck run had averaged 99.2 per cent attendance. This was the most successful show in the history of the Huron Country Playhouse. “The season has been set, the actors cast and the designs are ready,” stated Kate Burnett, director of development at the Huron Country Playhouse. “In his tradition, the show will go on. In his honour, the season will continue exactly as he had planned. His artistic vision will continue.” This 21st anniversary season marked the fourth year that Tony Lloyd was artistic director at the Huron Country Playhouse. A band musician's son, Tony was bom in Great Yarmouth, England. He started acting at age seven, at the Croydon Empire in England, where he made two shillings a week as “Tiny Tim” in the Charles Dickens' Classic A Christmas Carol. After joining the Royal Air Force in 1945, Tony continued to work in the theatre throughout Britain, doing summer repertory. He came to Canada in 1953 to join the Canadian Army, which was recruiting throughout Britain for trained ex-servicemen. Once his stint in the army was over, he pursued his acting career by joining Duff’s welcomes new pastor New Pastor Rev. Randy Banks has recently taken over the pastoral charges of Duff's United Church in Walton and the United Church in Bluevale. the Canadian Players Touring company. His first acting job in Canada was the role of “Grumio” in Shakespeare's Taming Of The Shrew". Since then, he has travelled extensively from Vancouver to Halifax, acting and directing in most major theatres across the country. In 1972, Tony was appointed artistic director at the newly formed Sudbury Theatre. He took the idea of the Sudbury Theatre from a dream to $3 million paid-for complex in 1984. This 300-seat theatre was the first major theatre to be built in Ontario since the Shaw Festival. Tony retired from the theatre in 1989, only to come out of retirement a few short months later to assume the position of artistic director at the Huron Country Playhouse. His previous roles at the playhouse include “Andrew Wyke” in Sleuth in 1984 and the guest director of Key For Two during the 1988 season. With Tony Lloyd at the helm, the theatre's attendance has increased steadily and box office records are broken each year. The Playhouse is now ranked third in attendance after the Stratford and Shaw Festivals for summer theatres in Ontario. When pressed for the reason for his success, Lloyd humbly states that his goal is to entertain his audience. It is a very simple philosophy, but one that has kept audiences coming back for more. With subscription sales at 120 per cent of last year's total, it looks like he has once again hit on Rev. Randy Banks became the new minister on July 5, of Duffs United Church in Walton and the United Church in Bluevale. Rev. Banks, who is originally from Brantford, Ontario, completed his undergraduate degree in reli gion and culture at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. He received his Master’s in Divinity at Emanuel College in Toronto in 1981. He began his pastoral duties in Grande Cache, Alberta, where he remained for four years. For the last five years Rev. Banks has been the minister at the MacGregor United Church in MacGregor, Manitoba. Rev. Banks and his family arrived in Walton, Friday, July 3. Services this Sunday will be the first time he officially takes over his two charges. After he and his family have fin ished settling in, Rev. Banks says he looks forward to meeting the people in both communities and getting to know them. Rev. Banks and his wife, Patty have four children Brandy, age 13, Tanner age 11, Geoffrey age six, and Cassandra age three. a winning combination of shows.
