Blyth Atoms come up big
The Blyth Atoms' soccer squad
took on the Lucknow Mustangs on
July 7. Not knowing this team,
Blyth was a bit nervous but came
out strong.
Jeremy VanAmersfoort assisted
the first goal with a long pass up
the centre to Matt Anderson, who
outsmarted the defence. Matt again
out-hustled the defense as Teague
Onn set him up. Matt scored his
third of the night from a rebound
off the crossbar after Jeremy's free
kick.
Near the end of the first half,
Lucknow came back to make it a 3-
2 game.
Early in the second half,
Lucknow went ahead by a goal.
Blyth played strong the last 10
minutes and Jeremy scored from a
penalty shot to tie the game. Then
Matt again outmaneuvered the
opposition and beat the goalie to
win the game 5-4. Darwin Buffinga
gave Blyth good goal tending. The
whole team played well.
PEE WEES
Blyth Pee Wees played host to
Newton in Belgrave on July 8. As
the game got underway, Blyth
proved they were serious. They
came up with lots of offence and a
number of good scoring chances
strong but couldn't penetrate the
Goderich defense. Goderich scored
two more goals to win the game 3-
but were denied. Finally Newton
got on the scoreboard at the end of
the first half.
At half time Blyth discussed a
few plays and came out strong in
the second half. With the play
going back and forth and just a few
minutes left, Lindsay Anderson
sent a pass up the centre to Rolf
Frsehknecht who tied the game.
Neither team had enough time left
to break the tie.
Ronnie Rinn gave Blyth some
key goal tending and our halfbacks
and defence played solid as well.
The final score was Blyth 1,
Newton 1. The next game will be in
Belgrave against Brussels on July
15.
BLYTH LOSES SECOND
GAME OF THE YEAR
On July 9 the Blyth Mosquito
soccer team played the Goderich
Lions. Blyth started off on the right
foot and got several chances but
Goderich proved to be too much for
the Blyth squad this time and
scored the only goal of the first
half.
In the second half Blyth played
o.
Adam Blair played a good game
in goal.
