Small donations were accepted to the Clinton or Seaforth hospitals. Blyth Atoms come up big The Blyth Atoms' soccer squad took on the Lucknow Mustangs on July 7. Not knowing this team, Blyth was a bit nervous but came out strong. Jeremy VanAmersfoort assisted the first goal with a long pass up the centre to Matt Anderson, who outsmarted the defence. Matt again out-hustled the defense as Teague Onn set him up. Matt scored his third of the night from a rebound off the crossbar after Jeremy's free kick. Near the end of the first half, Lucknow came back to make it a 3- 2 game. Early in the second half, Lucknow went ahead by a goal. Blyth played strong the last 10 minutes and Jeremy scored from a penalty shot to tie the game. Then Matt again outmaneuvered the opposition and beat the goalie to win the game 5-4. Darwin Buffinga gave Blyth good goal tending. The whole team played well. PEE WEES Blyth Pee Wees played host to Newton in Belgrave on July 8. As the game got underway, Blyth proved they were serious. They came up with lots of offence and a number of good scoring chances strong but couldn't penetrate the Goderich defense. Goderich scored two more goals to win the game 3- but were denied. Finally Newton got on the scoreboard at the end of the first half. At half time Blyth discussed a few plays and came out strong in the second half. With the play going back and forth and just a few minutes left, Lindsay Anderson sent a pass up the centre to Rolf Frsehknecht who tied the game. Neither team had enough time left to break the tie. Ronnie Rinn gave Blyth some key goal tending and our halfbacks and defence played solid as well. The final score was Blyth 1, Newton 1. The next game will be in Belgrave against Brussels on July 15. BLYTH LOSES SECOND GAME OF THE YEAR On July 9 the Blyth Mosquito soccer team played the Goderich Lions. Blyth started off on the right foot and got several chances but Goderich proved to be too much for the Blyth squad this time and scored the only goal of the first half. In the second half Blyth played o. Adam Blair played a good game in goal. The Tigers opened the tournament with a 9-0 mercy over Moorefield Saturday morning. Mike Watson pitched the win, striking out nine while Pete Exel hit a double and a triple in a game Brussels broke open with six runs in the fourth inning. Saturday afternoon the Belmore Stingers scored three times on four hits off Doug Conley for a 3-1 decision over the Tigers. Brussels scored their only run in their last at bat and despite having runners on second and third with one out in the seventh inning fell short. Sunday morning the Tigers advanced to the “B” Division final with a 5-0 shutout of the Wingham BP Juniors. Sunday afternoon the Tigers lost an emotion-filled heartbreaker to Walters Falls by a 6-5 score. Tied early, Brussels scored four in the fifth inning for a 5-1 lead but Walters Falls fought back with one in the sixth, then claimed the championship with four unanswered runs in the seventh. Despite the loss Brussels played some of their best baseball of the 1992 season, good enough to be challenged by the Chepstow Aces of the Bluewater league to an exhibition match. Brussels returns to Huron County Fastball action Wednesday night in Blyth and are at home to the Zurich Rangers Sunday night. As well, Sunday afternoon the Tigers host the Huron County Fastball League All Star Game. Todd Uhrig and Murray Pipe will be representing Brussels. Game time is 2:00 p.m. Lawn bowlers compete The Brussels Lawn Bowling club hosted a mixed pairs tournament Thursday, July 2 with a total of 20 teams competing. Winners were: first, Don Haines, 3 wins 49 with a plus of 9; second, Neil Bell, Seaforth, 3 wins 45 plus 1; third, Ed Eickmier, Mitchell, 2 wins 45 plus 15; fourth, Joe White, Atwood, 2 wins 44 plus 4; fifth, Len Brubacher, Elmira; 2 wins 41 plus 4; sixth, Helen Haines, Mitchell, 2 wins 41 plus 3; seventh, Len Patterson, Harriston, 2 wins 38; eighth, Pat Rowland, Brussels, 2 wins 37 plus 3; ninth, Peter trucker, Brussels, 2 wins 32; 10th, Joe Higgins, Mitchell, 2 wins 30; 11th, Dave Miller, Stratford, 2 wins 23; consolation, Graham Sprague, Harriston, 1 win 29. Jeremy Campbell got a run in the second inning. In the third inning, Justin Campbell, and Jamie McCal­ lum batted in runs with Jamie get­ ting a home run. The fourth and fifth innings were runless, but in the sixth, Jeremy Campbell, Ryan Fear, Kyle Ander­ son, Marc Alexander, Jason McBurney, Tom Pfeiffer, and Justin Campbell all got runs. Jamie McCallum, and Ryan Fear got home again in the seventh inning, with Ryan getting another home run.
