APPROVED AGENT' Brussels to do storm sewer A decision was made by Brussels council at its meeting of July 6, to proceed with the storm sewer con struction plans for the John and Church St. area, near the ball park. Councillor Greg Wilson present ed council with a storm sewer study done by B.M. Ross, which pin pointed three areas in the village where there were significant drainage problems and the cost to install a storm sewer in each. The first area was Elizabeth and Flora Streets. The estimated cost to do thistwo block area would be $103,000, which includes all paving and engineering work. The second trouble area is near the ballpark at John and Church Streets. Cost here was $88,300. The final one is from William St. towards the dam and is estimated at $35,500. Clerk Donna White told council that the village has $69,000 under PRIDE planned for storm sewer work over a three-year period. This year it was estimated that $6,300 would be needed for a study then $31,000 in each of the next two years (1993 and 1994). "The next step is to choose which area we should do," said Mrs. White. She noted that they have paid $2,900 for this portion of the work and another $3,000 will be spent on construction plans and approvals. She also told council that the $10,000 set aside in each of 1993 and 1994 under PRIDE for sidewalks could be moved over to help cover storm sewer costs. The third area was the first to be eliminated as it was the least prob lematic and the costs were not high enough for the PRIDE money. The water outside EMA was a concern to council but after some discussion it was felt that that prob lem may be lessened now, since a plastic bag, which had been plug ging the catch basin was recently removed. Councillors eventually agreed that the most urgent problem was the one at the ball park area so authorized Mrs. White to contact B.M. Ross and proceed with the construction plans. It will be requested that if possible the vil lage would prefer the work be done alongside the road. Mrs. White then said if they transfer the sidewalk PRIDE money there will be no money for a sidewalk to Huronlea. "If pavement is good enough for the road to school, it should be for there," said Councillor Hastings. "I don't see that we need to put one in."
