Deacon leads service at CRC The July 5 morning service at Blyth Christian Reformed Church opened with reading Psalm 86. Mr. Fred VanderSterre, deacon and member, led the service. After reading the Law, hymn #273 was chosen as the song of response with Angela Verburg playing the organ. Scripture was taken from Acts 20:13-38. The sermon topic was "Staying On Target". Mr. VanderSterre stated that a church wishing to "stay on target" follows three points. First the believers are willing to follow a self-denial mandate. Paul gave up his own needs and faced persecution, imprisonment, and physical abuse. Most of us seek self-affirmation and gratification. We like the rewards of being good. We hesitate to go out on a limb if it means self-sacrifice. We need to submit ourselves completely to God for correct motives. The second point Christians need to develop is integrity. Paul was full of integrity. He was straight forward, honest, and sometimes blunt. He did not seek favouritism. Christians who wish to stay on target will not be afraid to portray integrity. The final point the text revealed was that Christians will be a living witness to others. Some folks viewed Paul as being arrogant and presumptuous. However his boasting was not for his own gain but rather for God's glory! In conclusion, Mr. VanderSterre stated that the above three points, intermingled, should be our "Life Mandate", helping us stay on target. The service ended with singing #426, "Jesus With Thy Church Abide". The evening service held at 7:30 p.m. was led by elder, Mr. Martin Wilts.
