Listowel teams win big at Bulls’ tournament McKay ‘clears way’ to Tigers win Listowel came away with both championships at the third annual Brussels Bulls' Slo-pitch Tournament. Sixteen teams competed in the weekend event, which co-incided with the village's annual Fun-Fest weekend. Rabbi's Rebels of Listowel met the Bad Boys of Atwood in the championship final. The Bad Boys actually jumped to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning when Tim Deelstra singled home. Tim Buchanan, and Craig Robertson later sacrificed to Deelstra. The Rebels tied the score during their first at bat on Mike Chapman's RBI triple with one out. Chapman was later sacrificed home. The Rebels defense shut down the Bad Boys in the next five innings, allowing only three more runs. Meantime, Listowel singled Atwood to death. Singles by Matt Carter, Greg McClement, Steve and Mike Chapman, and Jeff Sipple, along with a triple by Tom Newbigging in the second inning alone, gave Rabbi's Rebels a 9-2 lead after two innings. Another Single-fest in the bottom of the fifth inning made the score 14-4 going into the final inning. The Bad Boys of Atwood finally solved the Rebels with three runs in the final inning, but it was too little too late. The final score was Rabbi's Rebels 14, and Bad Boys eight. With the victory, the Listowel Club received $500 in cash, and sweatshirts courtesy of Coors Light, the tournament sponsors. It was the same story in the B final. The Listowel Dodgers grabbed an early lead and held on to beat the Brussels Labellers. Eric Janes singled in Sean Bremner in the top of the second inning to give Brussels a 1-0 lead, however Listowel came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Bill Hiltz hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded scoring one run, and then Darryl Morrison scored two more with his follow up double. Listowel giabbed three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Dave Roader doubled to lead off the inning, and then scored on Grant Hartung's single. Hartung then scored on Gary Hopper's double to make the score 6-1 Listowel after three innings. The Dodgers continued to increase their lead with three more runs in the fifth inning and then scored five more times in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score Listowel 14 and Brussels two going into the final inning. Once again, the underdog seemed to get their offense going, but fell short of the mark. After singles by Jeff Heibein and Tom Austin, Mike Smith hit a two RBI single, followed by a single by Mike Thomas, and a two RBI single by George Hayes. Brussels' problem however was the first five innings. The Labellers only managed a dozen hits and two runs, so with the 14-7 victory, the Listowel Dodgers won $300 prize money and Coors Light T-shirts.
