THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 8, 1992 County plans to demolish most of old Huronview site Thousands of square feet of space will be demolished after the Huronview expansion is completed because there just isn’t enough demand for space in Huron to alter native uses. The huge central section of the old Huronview building, measuring more than 70,000 square feet, is almost certain to be demolished and, since costs to renovate it are nearly as high as to build from scratch, the one-story, 7000 square foot Eastdale portion of the build ing is also likely to be razed, coun ty councillors were told Thursday, during a special afternoon session of County Council at Huronview which included a tour of both old and new facilities. Getting a reprieve will be the "Summerhill" section of the home which is currently being used by the Huron Day Centre. That sec tion will have to get its own heating First hand look al.?'slcms tost$438,000 but the costs will be paid Huronview Administrator Wayne Lester points out a feature of the new Huronview facility at by the Centre’s board and the Clinton to Grey township Reeve Leona Armstrong during a tour of the facility Thursday. When province. the new building is finished, much of the old Huronview will be demolished. The other end of the building, the "1967" wing may become the home for the Huron County Health Unit and the headquarters of the Huron County Library. The Library had looked at the possibility of the "Eastdale" wing but the cost of enclosing the building and provid ing independent electrical and heat ing systems, plus renovations, would have hit $80 per square foot, almost the price of a new building, and wouldn't have been as satisfac tory as a new building. Enclosing the 1967 wing would cost only $35-$37 per square foot for the 15,000 square feet on each floor. It might require another $25 per square foot to renovate the inte rior to new uses. The Health Unit could make use of the top floor while the Library might be able to use the lower floor. The architect for the project will talk to Dr. Maarten Bokhout, County Medical Officer of Health and Beth Ross, County Librarian, about the needs of their depart ments before proceeding further.
