Clifford Coultes retiring Cliff Coultes of Belgrave, an English teacher at Listowel District Secondary School since 1970, is retiring from teaching after 33 years in the profession. The years have gone quickly for the man who began his career at the Chesley High School in 1959 fol lowing "two hot summers" of school at the College of Education in Toronto. Mr. Coultes later taught at Centre Grey High School in Markdale from 1961 to 1968 and Grey High lands Secondary School in Flesher- ton from 1968 to 1970. Early in his career business, eco nomics and law were also on his curriculum, as well as teaching English. In and out of school, Mr. Coultes is famous for his performing abili ties, having often been called upon to entertain with recitations he's gathered throughout the years. His students know him well for his portrayal of Merculio's last sword fight and death in "Romeo and Juliet" and for donning a nightgown and effectively becom ing Lady Macbeth in the sleep walking scene from "Macbeth". At the school year-end assembly, he, along with a few students, per- formed the scene form "Romeo and Juliet" for one last show. He's taken his public speaking ability and assisted many students in perfecting their own as well, encouraging them to enter local oratorical competitions. He has gotten the greatest satis faction from his career though and enjoys seeing his students get out in the world and make lives for themselves. He remains in touch with many of them. "Their youthfulness is stimulat ing for those of us who are getting over the hill," he says. Although he doesn’t have any specific plans for his retirement, Mr. Coultes says he won't be idle. He still lives on his family farm at Belgrave and plans to remain there, perhaps pursuing an interest in shorthorn cattle. Purchasing a vehicle is a big decision! Let us help you make the right one!
