Although it is part of the province-wide
United Co-operatives of Ontario today, the
Belgrave Co-op dates back to even before
UCO was formed.
The roots of the Belgrave Co-op go back
to the early 1900's when the Ontario
government encouraged Farmer's Clubs in
rural communities. The Belgrave Farmer's
Club had been meeting for social affairs but
in 1914 it joined in the co-operative
movement with Robert Coultes Sr. as the
first president and Abram Procter as
secretary-treasurer.
The co-ops of the period served as buying
groups, drawing farmers together to act as a
then had to be picked off by hand.
Among the other early group purchases
were sugar, salt, twine, lard by the tubfull,
oranges, peaches, oatmeal, flour, general
groceries, seed grain, formalin, alsike,
shingles and wire.
The co-ops pooled the orders of all the
farmers, bought in large quantities to get
discounts, then sold the smaller amounts to
individual farmers at low prices, eliminating
the middle man. The sales totals were a far
cry from the co-ops of today. Records from

Al bought a section of Lot 34, Cone. 3 and
moved permanently to the spot. Toronto was
getting to be too polluted and noisy for the
couple.
Jo appreciates the quiet of the country. "I
feel great up here", she says. She loves the
atmosphere East Wawanosh provides her for
her art. She still has to make contact with
what other artists are doing so she has to
jaunt off to cities like London, New York
and Toronto. After those ventures she is
glad to come back with her new ideas and
"sit in the nice countryside and think."
After 10 years of oil painting, Jo feels her
paintings have finally developed to a stage
where they are good enough to sell. Some
of her work can been seen in Martin Arts in
Bayfield. She has also exhibited her work at
the University of Waterloo, and Victoria
College. She has curated shows for Chilean
artists and she has taken a Canadian show to
Chile.
She was involved in the production of the
East Wawanosh history book Wilderness to
Wawanosh. Currently Jo is working on the
final art exhibit that is to appear at the Blylh
art gallery.
