East Wawanosh Township 125th Anniversary Commemorative Edition Published by North Huron Citizen Federation works to promote agriculture continued from page A22 the government to aid in the reconstruction of destroyed buildings. The Federation was reorganized in the late 1960's to join with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA). Individual service membership fees are sent directly to the OFA and funds are returned to the Huron County Federation of Agriculture based on membership in the county. Any money raised by the East Wawanosh Federation remains in the township for township use. Over the years, the East Wawanosh Federation of Agriculture has worked to promote and benefit agriculture. The organization has been involved in educational programs for farmers, in marketing boards, and in programs to eradicate bovine tuberculosis and brucelosis. The Federation has also been very active at all levels during the recent recessions in the farm economy. The OFA has consulted with farmers about constructive changes in order to develop a more viable agricultural industry. As Chris Palmer, regional director to the OFA, states "the issues start here on the farm, the grassroots of the organization, and every township has a role to play in representation at the county level". Issues in the township are brought before the East Wawanosh Federation, carried on to the county level, and then resolutions are sent to OFA in Toronto. Present issues the East Wawanosh Federation and OFA are lobbying for changes and amendments to are: the Labour Law, which concerns the farm worker's right to strike; the Environmental Bill of Rights, on which they want to see less strict emphasis placed on farmers; the tree vill, where they wish to see the farmers' normal practice allowed to continue; trucking regulations, in which all farm vehicles must be saftied every year; disentanglement, in which the township must pay for its own policing and road maintenance, thus increasing local taxes; and the land use reform, where they are against unnecessary severances. The purpose of lobbying for changes in these issues, Chris Palmer said, is that the farmer has the right to consultation on the issues that are going to effect him. "If the farmer is expected to carry these decisions, he must be a part of the decision making as well," he said. "The top priority of the Federation is that normal farming practices cannot be infringed upon". "The East Wawanosh Federation of Agriculture is an important part of the community," Chris Palmer said, "And to keep the farming community going is an ever ending battle". The township federation holds its annual meeting in March or April, which is usually attended by 50 to 90 members. Over the years, some notable guest speakers, such as Clay Switzer, Brigid Pyke, George Jones, Jack Wilkinson, and Roger George, have appeared at the meetings. A Christmas dance has also been held in recent years, after the crops are off in the fall. This year the Federation will also be entering a float in East Wawanosh's 125th Anniversary parade. The East Wawanosh Federation has been a strong and active organization for the past 51 years, with a steady membership averaging about 85 members. An annual membership drive is held every spring.
