Committee chairman Robert Charter, who gathered information from Cone. 3, ran into the same problems. He bets though that some of the people are wishing they’d put their story in now, or a better picture, since the book has turned out to be such a success. When asked if it was difficult getting all the information together and preparing it for publication, Mr. Charter replies that it wasn’t Committee hosts auction and dance On Saturday, June 6, the finance committee of the East Wawanosh 125 Celebrations held a Heritage Auction and Dance. Both events were to raise money, and to get people thinking about the forthcoming celebrations July 2-5. Committee chairman Vaughn Toll and his committee Ruth Olson, George Cull, and Jim Ross organized the day’s events. East Wawanosh auctioneer, Brian Rintoul donated his time, secretarial staff, and speaking system for the auction. Items from antiques to home baking were donated by individuals in the community. Local businesses donated many interesting goods and services. In the evening, a Heritage Dance was held with the Belgrave Kinsmen tending bar. Music was by “Yesterday's Wine”. Stage lights were borrowed from Steve Oliver, drama teacher at C.H.S.S., Clinton. An excellent lunch was catered by Green's Meat Market. really hard, but it was more that it took such a long time. The committee ended up breaking a lot of deadlines because it took so long for the information to come in. Wilderness to Wawanosh was originally slated for release by Christmas 1991. The committee ran into other problems along the way as well. The book's first editor, Toby Rainey, had to be replaced when she quit. Her assistant Lori Jamiesoi^..,. carried on as the new editor. The committee also had problems in typesetting; often the text had to be typed over several times since mistakes in the history kept slipping by. Adrian Vos was using his computer to write up the extensive index, but he came to the point where he had so many entries, his computer's memory couldn't handle anymore and entries had to be inserted by hand. There are 6000 names in the index. Some of the decisions that had to be made included the size of the book, the quality of the paper, and how many pictures they would have on each page. The committee decided from the beginning they were going to order 2000 copies of the book in hard cover. The coloured photographs section was decided on from the start as well. When she first heard of the history book project, Mrs. Toll knew she wanted to be a part of it right away. Even now, after five long years of labouring away, she says she "would be inclined to do a project like this again." She has better ideas of what to do and what not to do. For instance she feels they should have latched more onto the business end of things from the beginning. Adhering more to deadlines would have helped them to cut back on budget. Working on Wilderness to Wawanosh was a valuable learning experience, declares Mrs. Toll, and she "wouldn't have missed it for anything." At times things were frustrating, she admits, but it was good for bringing neighbours together and getting to know each other. Howatt Bros. Ltd.
