East Wawanosh Township 125th Anniversary Commemorative Edition / x^z Fowl supper a feast beyond compare There's an event held every October in Belgrave that shows that if area people ever have to raise an army, they already have the organizational skills. Most of the 1000 or more people who show up each year at the Belgrave Fowl Supper just come for a good meal but the event is also as well orchestrated as an army invasion or a huge theatre production. Within minutes each of the diners has a heaping plate of turkey and vegetables in front of him or her, served piping hot. The Fowl Supper is a tradition that dates back to 1949 when a supper for 1000 was held to celebrate the opening of the new Belgrave arena. Each year since the community surrounding Belgrave has held another big supper to help raise funds to keep the arena operating. It's a masterpiece of organization. Homes on each concession are assigned to bring certain parts of the dinner in amounts large enough to supply the huge crowd. Each group brings its prepared food to an assigned section of the arena at the appointed time. After grace is said, dozens of volunteer servers fan out across the building hurrying the food to the tables. Coffee is brewed in huge caldrons, then poured into jugs to take to the tables. The noise level from 1000 diners talking and eating can be loud but the organization still seems flawless. The dinner is one of those events that doubly rewards the community. The money raised helps provide a local arena at small cost to the taxpayers and the community benefits from the ties built by getting people working together. The many diners get the added benefit of having a good meal. Reid has prominent place in history continued from page A12 pioneer life from his native Huron County, beginning what many refer to as his "folklore in paint period". In 1906, Reid was appointed president of the Royal Canadian Academy. It was from this position he helped to launch a campaign to bring together the National Gallery of Canada collection in a suitable building. In 1912, the Associated Watercolour Painters was formed in Toronto with George Reid as a principal member. With the formation of the Ontario College of Art in the same year, Reid was appointed the school's first principal (1912-29). In 1915, Reid worked on a committee responsible for donating a collection of paintings to the Patriotic Fund. He was also commissioned to do works of art for the War Records Office in W? 17 and 1918. Following the death of his wife, Mary Hiester Reid in 1921, Reid soon remarried, wedding artist Mary E. Wrinch in 1922. George Reid remained active in the art he loved up until his death in 1947. The magnitude of his contribution both to the art and the educational life of this country guarantees Reid a prominent place in Canada's history.
