Arena, an integral part
of community togetherness
Up on the roof
k new roof went on the Belgrave
arena in 1986.
Always an integral part of any
community's togetherness is a place where
the people can gather, whether it be for
different sporting events or various numbers
of clubs and institutes. Since 1949, Belgrave
Community Centre has been a pivot point in
the East Wawanosh and Morris community
life.
Before the installation of the Community
Centre, the townships' residents had to make
due with what was in their means for
community activities. In 1934, 30
volunteers leveled the ground on George
Cook's farm on the south half of Lot 1,
Cone. 4, Morris Twp. on the outskirts of
Belgrave and they flooded it to form the first
ice rink. There were discussions to build an
enclosed ice rink until 1948 when it was
finally decided to build a combined arena
and community centre.
George Jordan donated the land for a ball
park, and C.R. Coultes gave some land for
the community centre. The fall and winter
of 1948, farmers donated trees to be cut into
lumber for the new building and gravel was
donated for fill. People helped out with cash
donations as well.
The summer of 1949 saw many work bees
at various stages of construction and
painting. It is estimated that around 75 per
cent of the work put into the new building
was by volunteers. Already the centre was
demonstrating community togetherness.
On October 27, 1949, nearly 1000 people
gathered for a hot turkey banquet to mark
the opening of the new community centre.
The building was valued at $19,000. George
Cook was presented with a key in honour of
his contributions to the project. A
fundraising fowl supper has been held
annually ever since.
During the winter of 1962-63 snow
covered the arena roof to a depth of several
feet and the roof ended up buckling. Part of
the building covering the ice surface was so
badly damaged that it had to be taken down
and replaced in 1963 with a stronger
framework. Roof trusses were reinforced
