The Spring Walk, Spring Talk activity gives students in Grades Kindergarten to four a chance to enjoy the colours, flowers and wildlife of the season. Water activities are also featured at the centre. Belgrave Creek Capers is an advanced activity for Grades six to eight. They use stream study techniques to create a cross sectional profile of the creek valley, determine water speed and investigate water quality indicators. For younger children there is Frosty Flurries. This introductory activity answers the complex question, "What is snow?" Getting to Know Snow is geared to the Grades five to eight classes. This advanced snow study activity gives them a chance to examine snow crystals, create a snow profile and try experiments in investigating freezing and melting. Working in small groups Kindergarten to Grade three students will collect stream creatures and identify them using Boots, Bubbles and Bugs bingo sheets. The importance of protecting the stream community will be stressed. There is a similar program for older students that looks at the biotic components of the creek. Aquatic organisms will be collected, identified and their adaptations examined. Factors threatening water quality will also be discussed. Several activities at the Centre are focused for educating children about wildlife. Instincts for survival is a simulation activity in which students in Grade four to eight, play the role of herbivores, omnivores and carnivores. Players learn the meaning of the food chain as they try to find food and water, while avoiding predators, the elements and disease. Owl Prowl is a simulation activity focusing on owls. This is geared to the middle grades, while Bird Brained is a bird feeding activity for grades five to eight. Students in Kindergarten to grade six investigate birds in the winter, their physical adaptations, behaviour and food preferences. Using visual and sound clues they identify the Fine Feathered Friends. Animal Adaptations has students in grades three to eight examining some of the adaptations animals use in the winter. Senior elementary students hear Fur and Folklore a brief overview of the history of the Canadian fur trade, after which there is a snowshoe hike. Planting trees, building bat boxes and creating wildlife shelters is another project young visitors to the centre can enjoy. There are tree identification programs for children from grade two through eight and a forest management activity for older grades. Educational activities also identify special habitats of wildlife and the impacts of pollution, erosion and wetland destruction. continued on page A9 KENNAIRN MATTADOR PORTIA V.G. 88 4,4313 10,423 332 3.3 P3.5 212-182-228 Portia has four daughters KENNAIRN CHIEF MARK SUNNY G.P. 83 Sunny was 1st 3-year-old highest production trophy, honourable mention for grand champion and reserve best udder for Huron County Show.
