Ethel man uncovers original poem in old Post
A poetic past
John Johnston of RR 2,
Bluevale holds up a
scrapbook in which he pasted
a poem about some eligible
bachelors in Grey Twp. The
poem appeared in the Feb.
24,1932 issue of The
Brussels Post.
You just never know what you'll
find when you start rummaging
through that box of old papers in
your attic or basement.
Just ask John Johnston of RR 2,
Bluevale who, when sorting
through some old newspapers his
mother had kept, found this humor
ous poem about the bachelors liv
ing in the area back in the 1930's.
The poem was printed in the
Feb. 24, 1932 issue of the old Brus
sels Post. It's author is unknown but
Mr. Johnston would be interested
in learning who the poet was.
If anyone knows, give Mr. John
ston or The Citizen a call.
LEAP YEAR IN GREY
Give us your rapt attention
Oh Maiden fancy free,
Here are the golden Leap Year
choices,
That will make your sorrows
flee.
The first is Stewart Turner
He's a little small —
And will marry some girl
If she's not too tall.
Then there is George Hislop
Living all alone
Some nice girl ought to say
"George! I want a home."
There is Sylvester Raynard
So fine and gay
He'd like to get married
Right away.
And there is Clifton McDonald
He is pining away.
He hasn't a wife
But he hopes to some day.
Then Jim McCartney
He's a fine man
He'll get married
As soon as he can.
And there's Jackson McCutcheon
Who has a nice pile
He would like a girl
To keep up in style.
Mervyn Grainger happy as can
be,
For him a jolly girl should try
Just put your cake upon the shelf,
You'll get him by and by.
There is Jack McDonald
Who hasn't got a bird
He is waiting for someone
To say the word.
There is Wilfred Hoy
He's got the gold.
And he'll marry a girl
If she not too old.
And there's Clifford McAllister
You all know him
He'll marry some girl
If she's not too slim.
Then there is Everett Wright.
So kind and true
He needs a woman
To love him too.
And Jim Turnbull
So brave and tall
The girl that gets him
Will get best of all.
Then there’s Bob McCartney
He's going down hill
If some girl would marry him
He'd soon make his will.
Roy McKay has been patient
Looking forward to the year
Now if some girl would ask him
He would be such a dear. *
Robert McCutcheon, is another
Waiting still in 'Bachelor's Row'
He'll accept you any minute
Anyone will tell you so.
Alex Pearson, a typical "sheik"
And attends the church on time
His eyes are on the pretty girls
We hope that he will shine.
Howard Savage a good young
farmer
Has no time for girls at all
So it is plain your hours are wast
ed
When ever on him you call.
Then comes John Raynard
As patient as can be
If you think he won't marry
Just ask him once and see.
Layton Muir a jolly boy is he
He smiles and that with vim
But girls don't waste your pre
cious time
It will take a smart one to get
him.
Andy McLennan still chores
away
But never late at night.
So, girls please heed my warning
Unless he take a fright.
Wesley Becket is still at large
And many a girl will sigh
Tho' the prospect would be so
bright
It's always worth a try.
I’ll say John Pearson's grand big
house
Without a wife looks bare
But before "some girl" gets him
You'll need to use a snare.

Abuse of legal drugs is
target of new strategy
A concerted approach to the
problem of alcohol, prescription
drugs and inhaled solvents abuse is
the front line of the province's new
Substance Abuse Strategy.
Health Minister Frances Lankin
says abuse of these legal substances
takes a great toll on the health of
Ontarians.
The Addiction Research
Foundation estimates that 650,000
Ontarians have a drinking problem.
More than 7,000 residents died
from alcohol-related causes in
1989. More than 17,000 Ontarians
were treated for prescription drug
use problems in 1985. Estimates
are that the associated excess health
care, law enforcement and reduced
productivity cost Ontario $2.9
billion. In 1989, almost two per
cent of students said they had
inhaled glue and 3.3 per cent had
inhaled some other solvent.
"We're bringing together
representatives from all over
government to work together and
with community groups and bodies
like the Addiction Research
Foundation to tackle the situation,"
said Ms. Lankin.
"In keeping with the goals and
priorities for my ministry, we will
aim our efforts at preventing abuse,
or at least stopping it in its early

Now there's a lot of lovely fel

Just ask them and see.
So all you girls of Grey Twp.
Who chance to read this rhyme.
The "bachelors" of the neigh

Await you to name the time.
Now show them you c^n do it.
The way is surely clear
Pick your man and bear in mind
It's a long time till next leap year.
stages. It’s more effective, both for
maintaining people's health and for
keeping health care costs down, to
avoid a problem before it starts."
Efforts will be aimed especially
at homeless youth, aboriginal
people, women, elderly people,
students, people living with HIV
and AIDS and people with
disabilities.
A committee headed by the
Ministry of Health and representing
16 other ministries, two
secretariats, one office and one
directorate has begun meetings to
co-ordinate the new strategy. The
ministry will also review its
existing addictions policies and
guidelines in consultation with
district health councils, service
providers and consumers.
Jo Anne Colson has been
appointed manager of the Office of
Substance Abuse Strategy at 80
Grosvener St., Toronto (327-8723).
