Sugar gets clean bill of health
Scientists have recently reviewed
the role of sugar in health and
examined the sugar consumption of
Canadians. The scientific reviews
have given sugar a clean bill of
health, with the exception of its
role in tooth decay. In fact, our new
Guidelines for Healthy Eating don't
mention sugar. The consumption of
sugar by the average Canadian (10
to 122 per cent of calories/was
found to be reasonable and much
lower than estimated. There is no
evidence to show that sugar causes
cancer, heart disease, hyperactivity
in children, hypoglycemia or
obesity in the amounts normally
eaten. While it is commonly
believed that we are eating more
and more sugar every year, Canadi
ans are actually eating the same
amount today as they did in 1920!
People often associate sugar with
weight gain. Research shows that
sugar consumption among over
weight people is actually lower
than among lean people. While
obesity has increased dramatically
in the last 40 years, sugar consump
tion has remained constant.
Really, it's your total food intake
that counts. Adequate and varied
food choices from all four food
groups are the cornerstone of good
nutrition. Sugar can be part of a
healthy eating style. It means a
moderate intake of sugar, whether
it be as lactose (sugar in milk), glu
cose, fructose, maple sugar,
molasses, or honey. Sugar does
make eating more enjoyable. It
improves many nutritious foods
that we might not enjoy otherwise,
like tart fruits or whole grain cere
als.
