In the big yellow bathtub with wall to wall carpeting we were introduced to the world of books and began to build Nicholson; (third row, left to right), Jamie Bayntun, Nancy Smith, Stephenie Alward, Regan Boyd, Andrea Willis, Jason Pettapiece, Jeremy Warner, Darryl Vanass, Lyle Hemingway; (back row, left to right), Karrie Warlow, Marco Marchitto, Eveline Haag, Nicole Moore, Riley Smalldon, Angela Clegg, Craig Moore, Troy Williams, and Jeff Zehr. BY KIM WERNHAM Some came from Nova Scotia, some from Switzerland, others from Kitchener, Niagara Falls, and yet others from the small hamlet of Ethel and surrounding countryside. Despite all the miles that separated each town a group of young people were destined to meet on one common ground. The place was Grey Central School and the years 1983 to 1992. Throughout nine years, 35 students experienced the educational and inspirational teaching of qualified and caring teachers. Fourteen of us here tonight, which I'll refer to as the 14 originals, came together in friendships that continued through the years. With one year of school under our belts, and a diploma in our hands, we breezed through the junior years. Mrs. Richmond, who became so attached to us, followed us right into grade one, making her main goal in life to send us on to grade two with reading skills of above grade average. In grade two Mrs. Martin moulded us into little addition and subtraction calculators and Mrs. Starkey in grade three enhanced what we had previously learned plus added yet more confusion by introducing division and multiplication. By the time we hit grade four we were duplicate Einsteins and Mr. Perry, who we greatly admired for his love of the apple, treated our taste buds to the delicacy of his own homemade apple cider. Through the years new students were added to our class, each one contributing something unique and special. Entering the senior hall for grades five to eight gave us a view of the more mature student, a feeling of independence. Mrs. Bailey taught some of us while a few of us were taught by Mrs. Whitmore in grade five.
