Brussels Last Saturday Doreen Dale, Helen Bray, Leola Hood and Mildred Jacklin of Brussels, along with Jean Noemer of Kitchener, were picked up at the post office at 9:45 a.m. by Cherrey Bus Lines as part of their second bus load of passengers. They proceeded on to a small community named Rob Roy, a short distance from Collingwood. After arriving at a Century Farm where an all-you-could-eal buffet barbecue was served, they were taken on hayrides around the hilly farm, which proved to be. great fun since the bales they were sitting on were purposely placed so that they slid forward going downhill and backward going uphill which turned out to be very entertaining. Then they were entertained by the Carlton Showband in a monstrous screened-in tent, for two - one-hour intervals with a half hour break in between. Their music, acoustics and singing were superb as well as their crazy antics. All in all, having been favoured by a sunny afternoon, they had a great day. Five R’s post car pool The Five R's Thrift Shop has agreed to post a "car pool" bulletin board donated by Town & Country Homemakers Home Support Services. Local citizens can use this board to post "rides wanted" and "rides to share". This is one small way in which people can work together for the betterment of the community. 3-time winner Pub Night Amy Thomas of Brussels took the Grand Championship in the Ontario Pork Congress Feeder Pig competition for the third straight year at the Congress in Stratford Friday. This time she beat out brother Jamie Thomas who took the Reserve Championship. a success Friendship Club seeks members On Wednesday June 16, tne Friendship Club finished their year with a beautiful "pot luck" lunch consisting of cold meat, casseroles, salads and a variety of desserts. After the usual opening ceremonies the treasurer's and secretary's reports were read. On Monday, June 22 the Huron County Town and Country Homemakers will meet at Medical Centre building at 10 a.m. Doris Hooper will be attending as the club's representative. As the September meeting will coincide with the Brussels Fall Fair, the nomination of officers will be held a week later on Wednesday Sept. 23. It was suggested every member bring a friend, to hopefully increase membership. Cards followed the meeting. The winners were: high man, Verna Tunney; low man, Sara Stephenson; high lady, Isabel Alcock; low lady, Mary Lowe; most lone hands, Pat Rowland and most zeros, Doris Hooper. J. Bernard receives Rebekah’s D.D.P. jewel The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge took place on Tuesday, June 23 with Noble Grand Leela Hood presiding. There was a good attendance. Mennonites hold workshop On Sunday, June 28, the congregation had a full day of special events. During the regular Church service Willard Metzger gave the message, and Rob Demaray gave a personal testimony. Tillie Lichty gave a mime presentation. The Horsts, Demarays and Lichtys ministered Jean Bridge and Lillian Moses each gave a report on the annual sessions of the Rebekah Assembly of Ontario I.O.O.F. held June 14, 15 and 16. It was decided to hold a summer picnic on Wednesday July 8 in the Lodge rooms. Joan Bernard received the District Deputy Commission for Huron District #23 on Wednesday, June 17 in Toronto. Morning Star Rebekah Lodge received a D.D.P. jewel which was presented to Joan by Marguerite Crawford P.D.D.P. This jewel is to be worn by each incoming Dis. Dep. of Morning Star Lodge. Joan has the honour of being the first to wear it. The Dist. meeting was held on Wednesday June 24 in Brussels. Lodge will resume September 8 with a pot luck supper. BY SANDRA JOSLING The organizers of the "Vegas Night" theme Pub night on Friday June 19 appreciate the generosity of local businesses and families who donated prizes. On Sunday, June 21 a large crowd arrived at the Brussels Community Center to enjoy an afternoon of singing, dancing and most of all Good Old Time Country Music. The Maitland Valley Barn Dance was again a huge success. Results from the euchre held on Wednesday, June 24 are as follows: high lady, Shirley Hopper; high man, Gord Jacklin; low lady, Lynda Shaw; low man, Al Caddington; most lone hands, lady, Dorothy Dilworth; most lone hands, men, Dave Adams; and most zeros, Colleen Martin and Ross Brighton. The next euchre night will be Wednesday, July 8. There will be FunFest Pub night at the Brussels Legion on Friday, July 3. On Wednesday, July 29, there will be a Blood Donor Clinic at the Brussels arena from 5:30 p.m. — 9:00 p.m. At this time there will be a "POINTS FOR PINTS" Legion Challenge. If you are a member at a Branch and care to be a donor, bring as many friends to the Clinic as possible. Have the friends say they were sent by you and give the Branch number. Instead of regular Sunday School classes the youth and adults divided into groups for workshops while the children were entertained by the Seiling Puppeteers from Elmira. Following a fellowship meal in the gymnasium, the children played games and then went swimming at the Brussels pool. The youth and adults continued workshop sessions. The day came to an end with a barbecue supper at Martin's Recreation Area, as well as with boating and fellowship in the evening. On Tuesday evening the ladies gathered at the church for the monthly meeting. A guest speaker from Survival Through Friendship House, gave an informative talk. The ladies' meetings will resume in September. VILLAGE OF BRUSSELS SECOND INSTALLMENT OF TAXES DUE The second tax installment for the Village of Brussels is due on FRIDAY, JULY 3, 1992. Interest at 1-1/4% per month or any part thereof will be charged after this due date. Please note that people who have acquired properties and have not received a tax bill should contact the Municipal Office. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve a taxpayer from responsibility for payment of taxes, nor from penalty for late payment. Donna M.
